Environmental precautions

Prevent material from entering sewers, water catchment areas or low-lying areas. Advise the relevant authorities if this cannot be prevented or if ground/vegetation has been contaminated.

Personal precautions

See section 8.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling

No special precautions are necessary beyond good hygiene. See section 8 for additional advice regarding personal protection equipment when handling this product.

Storage

Keep container closed when not in use. Do not store in open or unmarked container. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents and combustible material. Do not store near heat, sparks, flames or strong oxidizing agents.

Special precautions

Prevent small spillages and leaks to avoid slip hazard.

Warnings for empty packaging

Empty packaging retain residue and can be dangerous. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, solder, drill, grind or subject the packaging to heat, fire, sparks, static electricity or other source of ignition - The packaging can explode causing injury or death. 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Acute toxicity

Oral toxicity: Irritating (forecast) (LD50: >2000 mg/kg). Based on testing of similar products and/or components.

Dermal toxicity: Practically non-toxic (LD50: greater than 2000 mg/kg). Based on testing of similar products and/or components.

Inhalation toxicity: Irritating (LD50: >5 mg/l). Based on testing of similar products and/or components.

Eye irritation: May cause mild irritation. Based on testing of similar products and/or components.

Skin irritation: May cause mild irritation in case of prolonged or repeated contact. Based on testing of similar products and/or components.

Other acute toxicity data: Although an acute inhalation study was not performed with this product, a variety of mineral and synthetic oils, such as those in this product, have been tested. These samples had virtually no effect other than a non-specific inflammatory response in the lung to the aerosolized mineral oil. The presence of additives in other tested formulations (in approximately the same amounts as in the present formulation) did not alter the observed effects.

Subchronic toxicology (summary)

No significant adverse effects were found in studies using repeated dermal applications of similar formulations to the skin of laboratory animals for 13 weeks at doses significantly higher than those expected during normal industrial exposure. The animals were evaluated extensively for effects of exposure (hematology, serum chemistry, urinalysis, organ weights, microscopic examination of tissues etc.).

Reproduction toxicology (summary)

No teratogenic effects would be expected from dermal exposure, based on laboratory developmental toxicity studies of major components in this formulation and/or materials of similar composition.

Chronic toxicology (summary)

Repeated and/or prolonged exposure may cause irritation to the skin, eyes or respiratory tract. Overexposure to oil mist may result in oil droplet deposition and/or granuloma formation. For mineral base oils: Base oils in this product are severely solvent refined and/or severely hydrotreated. Chronic mouse skin painting studies of severely treated oils showed no evidence of carcinogenic effects. These results are confirmed on a continuing basis using various screening methods such as Modified Ames Test, IP-346, and/or other analytical methods. For synthetic base oils: The base oils in this product have been tested in the Ames assay and other tests of mutagenicity with negative results. These base oils are not expected to be carcinogenic with chronic dermal exposures.

Sensitization (summary)

Not expected to cause sensitization, based on tests of this product, components or similar products.

Other toxicological data

Used petrol engine oil have shown evidence of skin carcinogenic activity in laboratory tests when no effort was made to wash the oil off between applications. Used oil from diesel engines did not produce this effect.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Environmental precautions and effects

This product is expected to be potentially biodegradable. Bioaccumulation is unlikely due to the low water solubility of this product, therefore bioavailability to aquatic organisms is minimal. Available ecotoxicity data (LL50 >1000 mg/l) indicates that adverse effects to aquatic organisms are not expected from this product. When released into the environment, adsorption to sediment and soil will be the predominant behaviour.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Waste disposal

Spent oil is classed as hazardous waste and must be dealt with in accordance with current regulations. The product is suitable for burning at authority-approved facilities. In addition, the product is suitable for processing at an approved recycling facility or can be disposed of at an appropriate licensed waste disposal site. Use of these methods is subject to user compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Empty drums should be returned to an approved drum recycler. Emptying instructions: Position the drum with the plug downward with the 2-inch plug at the lowest point and somewhat inclined (approx. 10 degrees) until it stops dropping. Carefully scrape out all residue from grease drums. Treat drums with corrosive or toxic contents as hazardous waste.

EWC code

13 02 05 (mineral-based non-chlorinated engine, gear and lubricating oils). Waste produced from normal use of the product is of the type specified by the EWC code. If the product has been used in a different way or been subjected to external contaminants, the final waste may have a different waste classification. Refer to the ordinance on dangerous waste. This waste should be considered as dangerous waste in accordance with Council Directive 91/689/EEG on dangerous waste, provided that article 1(5) of the directive is not applicable.
