Steering gear, RHD

Steering gear, RHD

To remove

1. Slightly lift the front assembly.

2. Detach the hose from the steering gear delivery pipe.

3. Undo the resonator (not turbo) and put it to one side.

Diesel:

Remove the air cleaner cover and mass air flow sensor with hoses.

Undo the heater exhaust pipe and put it to one side.

Disconnect the electrical connection from the control valve and detach it from the bulkhead.

Detach the heater from the bulkhead and put it to one side. Use strap 83 95 212 to secure it to the engine.

4. Remove the wiper arms on both sides.

5. Remove the cover and water drainage.

6. Remove the three bolts on the wiper mechanism.

7. Unplug the connector and lift out the wiper assembly.

8. Remove the two rubber plugs.

9. Remove the two bolts on the brake servo through the revealed holes. Use a 6 mm hexagonal socket.

10. Remove the lower dashboard panel including the data link connector on the driver's side.

11. Remove the steering shaft lock bolt.

Warning

Secure the steering wheel to avoid damaging the contact roller (coil spring).

If the basic position of the contact roller is disturbed, the spiral conductor in the roller will be damaged when the steering wheel is turned full-lock. The airbag will then fail to function, causing risk for injury in the event of a collision.

Note

One way to secure the steering wheel is to tape it to the dashboard with heavy-duty adhesive tape of fabric-backed type.

12. Put the steering wheel into straight ahead position and lift off the steering shaft from pinion shaft.

13. Remove the brace between the MacPherson struts.

14. Detach and plug the return hose from the steering gear. Undo the clamps, plug the pipe and bend the hose upwards. Pinch together the hose with pinch-off pliers 30 07 739. Wipe up oil spill with a cloth.

15. Remove the lock plate and undo the steering arm on the steering gear.

16. Remove right and left mounting brackets.

17. Remove the bulkhead seal.

18. Lift up the steering gear through the engine bay.

To fit

1. Lubricate the rubber bushings with petroleum jelly.

2. Transfer the return pipe and delivery pipe to the new steering gear.

3. Position the steering gear in the engine bay.

4. Fit the bulkhead seal. Position the groove in the seal against the groove in the steering gear.

5. Fit the right and left mounting brackets loosely.

Note

The clip securing the fuel pipes.

6. Fit the right mounting bracket first. Make sure the smooth surface of the steering gear is against the bulkhead partition. Tighten the bolts (apply Loctite 242, part no. 749 6268, to the mounting bracket bolt). Fit the left mounting bracket.

Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)

Important

It is extremely important that the steering gear mounting brackets are fitted in the correct order. Otherwise the steering gear can be fitted in such a position that the angle to the steering column fitting is incorrect.

7. Fit the return hose to the steering gear. Fit the clips and the hose to the delivery pipe.

8. Fit the steering arms to the steering gear and secure them. Fit a new lock plate each time the steering gear is removed from the car.

Tightening torque: 93 Nm (69 lbf ft)

Diesel:

Fit the heater and the control valve with electrical connection.

Make sure all the vacuum hoses are in place.

Fit the heater exhaust pipe.

9. Fit the brake servo bolts with threadlocker and tighten them (Loctite 242, part no. 749 6268).

Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)

10. Fit the two rubber plugs.

11. Fit the wiper assembly.

12. Plug in the connector.

13. Fit the water drainage and cover.

14. Fit the wiper arms.

15. Fit the brace between the MacPherson struts.

16. Fit the resonator (not turbo).

Diesel:

Fit the air cleaner cover and the mass air flow sensor with hoses.

17. Fit the steering shaft to the pinion shaft and tighten it.

Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)

18. Remove the tape or other means used to prevent the steering wheel from moving.

Warning

If the steering wheel position has been altered, the coil spring must be adjusted.

For adjusting the contact roller, see To fit the contact roller.

19. Fit the lower dashboard panel including data link connector.

20. Lower the car and turn the wheels to point straight ahead.

21. Fill the hydraulic fluid reservoir with the specified fluid. Start the engine, turn the steering wheel to the right and left lock positions 2-3 times. Turn off the engine and correct the fluid level. At 20 C, it should be in between the MAX and MIN markings on the dipstick in the hydraulic fluid reservoir.

22. Check for leaks at the control valve couplings.

23. Make sure the steering wheel is positioned “straight ahead” when the car is steering straight ahead on a level road.
