Steering swivel member

To remove



1. Slacken the hub centre-nut when all four wheels of the car are on the floor.

2. Raise the car and remove the wheel.

3. Unscrew the hub centre-nut completely.

Remove the wheel sensor.

4. Use a pair of slip-joint pliers to press in the brake piston. Remove the caliper from the steering swivel member and suspend it in the wheel housing by means of a cable tie.

5. Remove the brake disc and the cover plate.

6. Slacken the tie-rod end nut slightly.

Press out the tie-rod end bolt with Puller 89 96 696 .

Undo the nut and lift the tie-rod end bolt out of the hole.

7. Unscrew the nut securing the anti-roll bar to the suspension arm.


8. Undo the nut on the outer ball joint. Put Puller 89 96 696 on the link arm and press the ball joint out of the steering swivel member. Unscrew the nut. This nut is of self-locking type and must not be reused.

9. Lift the plastic cover off the top MacPherson strut mounting and unscrew the three nuts.

10. Lift off the MacPherson strut and place it in a vice. Compress the spring with Spring compressor 88 18 791 and holder 88 18 809.

11. Grip the piston rod and remove the nut with socket 89 96 662. The nut is of self-locking type and must not be reused.


12. Remove the bearing and upper spring seat.

13. Remove the spring, rubber gaiter and compression stop.

14. Remove the damper using Spanner 89 96 670 .

15. lift the damper out of the MacPherson strut.


To fit



1. Inspect the gaiter and bushes for damage.

2. Tighten the damper using Spanner 89 96 670 .

Tightening torque: 215 Nm (159 lbf ft)

3. Fit the spring and zinc washer. The lower end of the spring should abut against the stop in the bottom spring seat.

4. Fit the spring shim and mounting.

Make sure that the lower washer is fitted the right way round. Do this by making sure that the part no. marking is face down. Grasp the piston rod and tighten the nut with socket 89 96 662. Remove Spring compressor 88 18 791 and Holder 88 18 809 .

5. Position the MacPherson strut on the car and tighten the three retaining nuts on the top mounting. Tighten the nuts alternately.


Tightening torque: 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)

6. Tighten the ball joint retaining nut.

Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55 lbf ft).

7. Tighten the nut securing the anti-roll bar to the link arm.

Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7 lbf ft)

8. Refit the back plate and brake disc.

9. Check that the brake piston is pressed back in the cylinder. Fit the brake caliper to the steering swivel member (the screws threads should be sealed using Loctite 242, part no. 749 6268).


Tightening torque 110 Nm (81 lbf ft)

10. Fit the wheel sensor.

11. Tighten the hub centre-nut slightly.

Warning

A new hub centre-nut should always be fitted if it has been loosened, as the clamping force of the lock embossing is reduced when refitted.

Use nut with top groove.


12. Fit the wheel. See Wheels .

Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81 lbf ft)

13. Lower the car and tighten the hub centre-nut when all four wheels of the car are on the floor.

Tightening torque: 170 Nm +45° (126 lbf ft +45°)

14. Tighten the nut on the upper bearing. Fit the plastic cover over the nuts.

Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55 lbf ft).

15. Pump the brake pedal to advance the brake pistons in the calipers.
