Complete side, soft top mechanism

The method describes the left side. Use the same method on the right side.

Removing


1. Remove the rear side trim. See Rear side trim, CV .

2. Remove the relay panel.

3. Manoeuvre the soft top to half open position and position the soft top support special tool Soft top support (16) 82 93 144 so that the soft top does not fall when the hydraulic pressure is released.

4. Remove the seal from the rear rail.


5. Remove the centre seal. Remove the rail and keep track of the clips.

6. Remove the stop lug in the second bow and use a plastic hammer to tap out the bow from the control linkage guide pin.

7. Drill out the rivets securing the elastic bands. Remove any burrs from the holes.

8. Remove the screws and clip securing the headlining to the rear rail.

9. Pull out the fabric from the rear rail.

10. Remove the screw securing the cable to the rear rail.

11. Drill out the pop rivet securing the base.


12. Bend up the rail for the base and remove the screws securing the third bow.

13. Remove the control linkage stub axles (from the inside) and the hinge for the first bow.

14. Remove the soft top support special tool (16) 82 93 144 and raise (close) the soft top.

15. Remove the screw to the fourth bow. Lift away the fourth bow.


16. Unplug the connectors from the electrically heated rear window and remove the gas spring.

17. Remove the two fifth bow screws. Lift away the fifth bow.

18. Unplug the connectors.


19. Remove the cylinders from the soft top mechanism.

20. Remove the three nuts positioned on the side of the soft top mechanism in the body. Lift out the entire side.


Fitting


1. Lift in the side assembly. Guide it in using the stop lugs.

2. Insert the cables.

3. Tighten the nuts.


Tightening torque : 28 Nm (20.7 lbf ft)

4. Fit the first bow to the centre rail.

5. Fit the control linkage stub axles (from the outside).

6. Fit the second bow.


7. Fit the third bow and bend down the rail with the base.

8. Pop rivet the base and the elastic band.

9. Fit the cable to the rear rail and pull the cable attaching lug as far rearwards as possible so that the bolt abuts the front end of the attaching lug groove. Tighten the bolt.

Tightening torque : 12 Nm

Turn the bolt an additional 120°-170°.


10. Fit new double-backed tape to the rear rail.

Refit the upholstery over the rear rail and fit the seal.


11. Fit the centre rail and the middle seal.

12. Fit the fourth bow.


13. Fit the fifth bow.

14. Fit the window guide for the rear window and plug in the connectors for the electrically heated rear window.

15. Fit the fifth bow end seal.

16. Fit the hydraulic cylinders.

17. Manoeuvre the soft top into closed position. Do not lock the soft top in the windscreen frame.

18. Tighten the side cable bolt on the rear rail.

Tightening torque : 12 Nm


19. Pop rivet the elastic band to the centre rail.

20. Fit the screws and clip securing the headlining to the rear rail.

21. Adjust the soft top .

22. Connect the diagnostics tool, erase any diagnostic trouble codes.
