Checking camshaft adjustment

To remove

1. Remove the upper engine cover.

2. Unplug the mass air flow sensor connector. Certain models: Detach the SAI hose. Undo the turbocharger inlet hose and remove the filter casing cover. Remove the filter element.

3. Detach the fuel pipes from their snap fasteners and remove the bracket bolts from the camshaft cover.

4. Remove the cover over the ignition coils.

5. Remove the bolts, lift up each ignition coil and move aside. Start with the ignition coil for cylinder 1.

6. Detach the crankcase ventilation hose from the camshaft cover.

7. Undo the cable duct from the cylinder head and camshaft cover and move it carefully aside.

8. Detach the ground lead from the camshaft cover.

9. Remove the heat shield over the turbocharger.

10. Remove the camshaft cover.

11. Raise the car and remove the right-hand wheel.

12. Remove the right wing liner.

13. Relieve the pressure on the belt tensioner and remove the belt. Use 83 96 095 Belt circuit relieving tool B207E/L . Mark the belt's direction of rotation.

14. Lower the car and zero the engine by turning the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine until the marking on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the marking on the timing cover. The cam lobes on cylinder 1 intake and exhaust camshafts should be pointing up/in.

15. Remove the exhaust camshaft and intake camshaft bearing shells no. 2 and no. 7. Position the 83 96 046 Kit, adjustment tool, camshaft 175 HP and 83 96 079 Adjustment tool, camshaft (B207, 200 HP) by pressing down the tool by hand onto the camshafts without tightening the bolts.

Important

When fitting the tools, use the screws accompanying the new tools EN-48366 and EN-48368.

16. If the adjustment tools does not fit the cam lobes undo the camshaft gear bolts slightly, gripping the camshaft with a spanner on the flats. Tighten the adjustment tools' bolts.

Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 lbf ft).

17. Check that the markings on the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover are in agreement. Tighten the camshaft gear a first step, gripping the camshaft with a spanner on the flats.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft).

18. Remove the adjustment tools and fit the bearing caps.

Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 lbf ft).

19. Tighten the camshaft gear to its final torque. Grip the camshaft with a spanner on its flats.

Tightening torque 85 Nm + 30° (63 lbf ft +30°)

20. Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns in the direction of engine rotation until the mark on the crankshaft pulley agrees with the mark on the timing cover. Remove the bearing caps and fit 3 96 046 Kit, adjustment tool, camshaft 175 HP and 83 96 079 Adjustment tool, camshaft (B207, 200 HP) again to check the camshaft setting. Remove the adjustment tools and refit the bearing caps.

Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 lbf ft).

To fit

1. Raise the car, relieve the belt tensioner and fit the belt in the marked direction of rotation.

2. Fit the right wing liner.

3. Fit Wheels .

4. Lower the car and fit the camshaft cover with new seals. Take care not to disturb the position of the seals when fitting.

Tightening torque 10 Nm (8 lbf ft).

5. Fit the heat shield over the turbocharger. Make sure the clip under the heat shield snaps onto the holder.

6. Connect the ground cable to the camshaft cover.

7. Fit the cable duct on the camshaft cover.

8. Connect the crankcase ventilation hose to the camshaft cover.

9. Fit the ignition coils. Start with ignition coil for cylinder 4.

Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 lbf ft).

10. Fit the cover over the ignition coils.

11. Fit the bolts for the bracket to the camshaft cover and fit the fuel pipes in their snap fasteners.

12. Refit the filter element.

13. Fit the cover on the air cleaner casing. Plug in the mass air flow sensor connector. Certain models: Connect the SAI hose. Connect the turbocharger inlet hose to the air cleaner.

14. Fit the upper engine cover.
