Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682, dislodged pins in H42-2

Cars affected

Saab 9-3 (9440) M03 with engine alternative B207E/L/R

Background

Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682 can be indicated despite the fault being located elsewhere than indicated by fault diagnosis. Several electronic throttle actuators have been replaced unnecessarily when the fault is dislodged pins in connector H42-2.

For this reason, H42-2 must be checked with regard to dislodged pins before the electronic throttle actuator is replaced. In particular, check the pins which are connected to the accelerator pedal position sensor (pins 13, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20 in H42-2).

In the case of customer complaint the following procedure must first be carried out.

Symptom description

Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682 are/is indicated.

Procedure

1. Read off the car's diagnostic trouble codes.

2. Remove the battery cover.

3. Remove the battery with battery coolant pipe, the bonnet (hood) switch and the fuse box.

4. Aut: Remove the TCM control module connector and detach the connector under the control module.

5. Remove the battery tray.

6. Unplug connector H42-2 (grey connector)

7. Detach the clamp and cables. Use test cable with pin size 0.6 x 0.6 mm from kit 86 12 731. Guide test cable pin into connector pin to sense the clamping force of the pins concerned.

Also check that the engagement on the pins is the same depth as other pins in the connector. Poor clamping force and inadequate connector pin engagement depth can cause poor contact.

Also check the male contact so that no pins are bent, dislodged or damaged.

8. If dislodged pins or pins with poor clamping force are observed then this must be rectified.

9. Fit the clamp, cables and connector. Fit the battery tray.

10. Aut: Fit the connector under the control module and the TCM control module connector.

11. Fit the fuse box, the bonnet (hood) switch and the battery with coolant pipe.

12. Fit the battery cover.

13. Carry out a driving cycle, i.e. run the car with varying engine loads and engine speeds for five minutes.

14. Using the diagnostic tool, check that the diagnostic trouble code has not returned.

15. If the diagnostic trouble code remains, follow normal fault diagnosis.

16. Carry out the procedure in accordance with WIS - 9-3(9440) - Body - Doors and locks - Adjustment/Replacement - Measures after disconnecting the battery.
