Fuel tank

Warning

Removal of the fuel tank involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must therefore be observed in connection with this work.

Have a class BE fire extinguisher on hand! Be aware of the risk of sparks, i.e. in connection with electric circuits, short-circuiting, etc.

Absolutely No Smoking!

Ensure good ventilation! If there is approved ventilation for evacuating fuel fumes then this must be used.

Wear protective gloves! Prolonged exposure of the hands to fuel can cause irritation to the skin.

Wear protective goggles.


Important

Be particulary observant regardning cleanliness when working on the fuel system. Loss of function may occur due to very small particles. Prevent dirt and grime from entering the fuel system by cleaning the connections and plugging pipes and lines during disassembly. Use 82 92 948 Plugs, A/C system assembly. Keep components free from contaminants during storage.


To remove


1. Reduce the fuel pressure by removing fuse 2 while the engine is running (fuse 2 is in the main fuse box in front of the battery). Once the engine has stopped, turn the ignition key to LOCK and refit the fuse.


2. Drain the fuel tank. See Emptying the fuel tank . Leave the filler cap in place.

3. Position the car on a lift.

4. Raise the car.

5. Remove the rear right wheel.

6. Remove the bolts and nuts for the wing liner.


7. Detach the wing liner from the studs.

8. Detach the wing liner from the edge of the wing, starting from the rear. Detach it little by little until it comes loose from the whole edge of the wing. Remove the wing liner.


9. Undo the rear spoiler shield.


10. Remove the rubber mountings and carefully lower the exhaust system, support with 83 95 212 Strap .


11. Disconnect the fuel and purge connections on the EVAP emission canister. Collect any fuel spill.


12. Plug the connection to the outlet line from the fuel pump.

13. Unplug and detach the connector on the EVAP emission canister.

14. Detach the hose between the filler pipe and the tank and disconnect the purging quick-release coupling.


15. Place a single-column lift under the tank, remove the tank straps and remove the tank. Take care when removing the tank and make sure none of the components or connections are damaged.



To fit


1. Remove the filler pipe and change the connecting hose between the tank and the filler pipe.

2. Lubricate the filler pipe connection to the filler cap opening with Vaseline.

3. Fit the filler pipe and insert the screw. Check the position of the rubber seal in the filler cap opening and adjust as necessary.

4. Lift up the tank and fit the tank straps.


Tightening torque 25 Nm (18 lbf ft).

5. Connect the hose from the fuel filler pipe and tighten the hose clamp.


Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 lbf ft).

6. Tighten the screw on the fuel filler pipe.

Tightening torque 25 Nm (18 lbf ft).

7. Reconnect the purge hose.

8. Plug in the connector on the EVAP emission canister.


9. Connect the purging and fuel lines.

10. Position the wing liner at an angle. Insert the bottom edges of the wing towards the wheel housing. Guide the wing to the upper studs. Then position it on the remaining studs.


11. Position the wing liner to the edge of the wing and the bumper shell. The wing liner must be located behind the bumper shell.


12. Check the fit of the wing liner.

13. Secure the rear spoiler shield.


14. Fit all the nuts and bolts.


15. Fit the wheel .

16. Fit the rubber mountings and fit the exhaust system.


17. Lower the car.

18. Fill with correct octane petrol and fit the filler cap.

19. Connect an exhaust extractor and start the engine to check its operation.
