Alternator, 4-cyl diesel, LHD

To remove


1. Remove the battery cover and disconnect the negative battery cable.


2. Raise the car.

3. Remove the plastic nuts from the wheel arch liner and move it aside.


4. Remove the lower engine cover.

5. Unload the belt tensioner and unhook the poly-V belt from the alternator.

Important

Make a note of the belt's direction of rotation. The belt must be refitted for the same direction of rotation as previously.



6. Lower the car.

7. Remove the upper engine cover.


8. Detach the intake hose from the air filter and turbocharger.


9. Detach the crankcase ventilation hose from the camshaft cover.

10. Disconnect the fuel lines; use 83 95 261 Fuel line tool .


11. Plug the fuel lines and move them aside.

12. Put the windscreen wipers in the service position.

13. Open the bonnet.

14. Remove the right-hand clips from the cover.


15. Loosen the rear bonnet seal to half.

16. Lift aside the foam block and lift the front edge of the cover so that the catch and clips release at the back edge. Bend aside the corner tab.

17. Bend up the cover to half.

18. Detach the fuel filter holder from the bulkhead partition.


19. Remove the heat shield.


20. Unplug the alternator connectors.


21. Remove the screws holding the cable duct.


22. Move the cable duct aside.

23. Remove the alternator's lower retaining bolt.


24. Remove the alternator's upper retaining bolt.

25. Lift out the alternator.



To fit


1. Lower the alternator into place.


2. Put the alternator's upper retaining bolt in place and fit the nut.


3. Put the alternator's lower retaining bolt in place and fit the nut.

4. Tighten the alternator's upper retaining bolt.

Tightening torque 47 Nm (35 lbf ft)

5. Tighten the alternator's lower retaining bolt.

Tightening torque 47 Nm (35 lbf ft)

6. Plug in the alternator connectors.

7. Insert the cable duct screws starting with the centre one.


8. Tighten the cable duct screws.

9. Fit the heat shield.


10. Fit the fuel filter holder to the bulkhead partition.


11. Lower the cover.

12. Bend down the corner tab so that it goes past the hinge and bonnet. Insert the corner tab under the windscreen moulding. Insert the catch under the windscreen and press down on the cover so that the clips fasten.


13. Lift up the foam block and fit the clip. Fit the rear bonnet seal.

14. Connect the fuel lines.


15. Fit the intake hose to the air filter and turbocharger.


16. Fit the crankcase ventilation hose to the camshaft cover.

17. Fit the upper engine cover.


18. Raise the car.

Important

Make a note of the belt's direction of rotation. The belt must be refitted for the same direction of rotation as previously.


19. Refit the poly-V belt.

Note

Make sure that the belt is correctly positioned on all the pulleys.



20. Fit the plastic nuts on the wheel arch liner.


21. Fit the lower engine cover.

22. Lower the car.

23. Connect the negative cable of the battery.


24. Fit the battery cover.

25. Check the battery when replacing, see Battery Check and charge the battery if necessary, see Charging the Battery .

26. Reset the car; see Procedures after battery disconnection .

27. Bleed the fuel line; see Bleeding the fuel line .
