To remove

Warning

The cooling system is under pressure. Hot coolant and steam can escape.

- Open the cap slowly to release the pressure.

- Carelessness can cause eye and burn injuries



1. Undo the expansion tank cap to release pressure and then retighten the cap.


2. Raise the car.

3. Undo the right-hand side of the front spoiler shield and fold it down.


4. Place a suitable receptacle under the radiator. Connect a hose to the radiator and drain the coolant. Close the cock. Fit the spoiler shield.


5. Lower the car.

6. Remove the upper engine cover.

7. Remove the turbocharger delivery hose from the throttle body and the turbo delivery pipe


8. Undo the coolant pipe.

Important

Take care when releasing the locking mechanism on the connector so as not to damage the connector. Pull the halves straight apart to avoid bending the pins. For further information regarding connectors, refer to Connectors, handling and inspection .



9. Remove the coolant temperature sensor connector.

10. Remove the coolant temperature sensor.

11. Remove the hoses from the thermostat housing.

12. Remove the thermostat housing from the cylinder head.



To fit


1. Fit the thermostat housing with a new gasket.

Tightening torque 25 Nm (18 lbf ft).


2. Fit the coolant hoses to the thermostat housing.


3. Fit the coolant temperature sensor with a new gasket.

Tightening torque 22 Nm (16 lbf ft)

Important

Take care when plugging in the connector so as not to damage or press out the pins/sleeves in the connector. For further information regarding connectors, refer to Connectors, handling and inspection .


4. Fit the coolant temperature sensor connector.

5. Tighten the coolant pipe.

6. Fit the turbocharger delivery hose to the throttle body and the turbo delivery pipe.


7. Pressure test the cooling system, see Cooling system, pressure testing .

8. Fit the engine cover.


9. Fill with 40 - 400 131 389 Coolant and bleed the system, see Filling and bleeding the cooling system, Z19 .
