P0400 5A EDC16 - Saab 9-3/9-5 TiD

VEHICLES CONCERNED

Saab Saab 9-3/9-5 with Z19DT/DTH engine.

CONDITIONS

EGR valve stuck open/closed due to soot contamination and/or corrosion. At present EGR valves are in limited supply but in the interim period an EGR cleaning method has been developed as a temporary solution. Please be aware that is method will not be released as a TSB but can avoid a situation that cars will remain off the road due to non availability of spare parts.

SYMPTOM DESCRIPTION

Check engine light on with DTC P0400 5A EDC16 reduced engine performance. EGR-valve stuck, other DTCs and symptoms can also be present.

ACTION

New EGR valve (PTFE sealing and modified spring) in release process.

Dismount the EGR-valve, separate the unit, electrical and valve.

Note: Mark unit for correct assembly.

Use cleaner agent (eg Forte Carb Cleaner) to clean soot from the valve.

Use a drill to rotate the valve, see picture.

Spray and clean with rotation and axial movement. Check that the valve moves easily.

Check the electrical unit connected to wiring harness with activating Tech 2

Assemble the two units and check EGR FLOW with Tech II Check pivot arm for movement.

Note: The valve can be in open for approx 1 minute on idle after start. Perform Tech 2 EGR Actuator test: The following values are OK (cold-warm) Air flow falls from ~35-50 kg/h to ~ 12-18kg/h swirl flaps start operating (Z19DTH)

If the pivot arm is not moving or is stuck the reason can be that the piston within the solenoid valve is stuck because of corrosion or soot.

Drill a 3mm hole (see picture) Use an anti corrosive fluid

Push the piston back and forwards until the piston is free.

Turn EGR upside down to ensure that the fluid can flow out.

Use tape to cover the hole,

Assemble the valve and check using Tech 2 test as above, delete DTCs,
