Saab 9-3 (9440) 4D M03 - M05 within Vehicle Identification Number range 31000001 - 51056947.

Background

On some vehicles the cable terminals in the boot lid handle unit may contact the boot lid and cause an electrical short circuit to ground. This may cause an internal open circuit in the luggage compartment electrical centre (REC).



In the case of customer complaint, the following procedure must be carried out.

Symptom description

High-level brake light and/or number plate lighting inoperative or continuously on.



Parts required

12 805 846 Electrical centre, luggage compartment (REC)

16-86 12 145 (CA: 12355010)Kit with shrink tubes (sufficient for 2 cars)

Procedure


1. Remove the boot lid handle unit in accordance with WIS - 8. Body - Doors and locks - Adjustment/Replacement - Bootlid opening handle.

2. Detach the cable terminals from the unit.


3. Cut the shrink tube into 20 mm long pieces.

4. Thread a piece of shrink tube over each cable terminal. Heat the shrink tube on with a hot-air gun.

Note

The shrink tube must cover the whole cable terminal.



5. Connect the cable terminals.

6. Carefully press the cable terminals into the unit to ensure that they do not make contact with the boot lid.

7. Fit the boot lid handle unit in accordance with WIS - 8. Body - Doors and locks - Adjustment/Replacement - Bootlid opening handle.

8. Replace the luggage compartment electrical centre (REC), see "Electrical centre, luggage compartment (REC), replacement" below.




Electrical centre, luggage compartment (REC), replacement

To remove:

Carry out the procedures before removing a control module in accordance with WIS - 3. Electrical System - Wiring harness and components - Fuse box - Fault diagnosis, general - Procedures before dismantling the control module.


1. Remove the battery cover.


2. Detach the battery negative cable.

3. Open the left-hand side hatch in the luggage compartment.


4. Remove the clips holding the luggage compartment carpet.

5. Fold the carpet aside.

6. Detach the SPA control module from the electrical centre.


7. Unplug the electrical centre connectors.

8. Pull out the catch.


9. Press in the lock tab and remove the electrical centre.


To fit:


1. Fit the lower edge of the electrical centre in the correct position.


2. Press the electrical centre in at the top and insert the catch.

3. Plug in the electrical centre connectors.


4. Press the SPA control module into the electrical centre.

5. Fold back the carpet.

6. Fit the clips holding the luggage compartment carpet.


7. Close the left-hand side hatch in the luggage compartment.

8. Connect the battery negative cable.


9. Fit the battery cover.

10. Carry out the procedures after replacing a control module in accordance with WIS - 3. Electrical System - Wiring harness and components - Fuse box - Fault diagnosis, general - Procedure after changing the control module.

11. Reset the car, see WIS - 3. Electrical System - Charging systems - Adjustment/Replacement - Procedures after disconnecting the battery.
