Coolant in automatic transmission fluid

Fault symptom

Coolant could leak into the automatic transmission fluid due to inadequate sealing between the oil pipes' nipple and the radiator.

Conditions

CHECK GEARBOX lamp illuminated, diagnostic trouble codes P0715 00 and P 0720 00 in TCM and deteriorated shifting quality. Sometimes there is noise during shifting.

Action

Check the quality of the automatic transmission fluid by taking a sample in a narrow glass tube. Hold a lighter flame under the tube. If after approx. 30 seconds there are bubbles rising to the surface then there is coolant in the oil. (If you have no access to a glass tube then a useful alternative is a spoonful of oil that is heated as above.)

After establishing that there is coolant in the automatic transmission fluid, replace the automatic transmission assembly and carry out the procedure described in MI 260-2634:

1. Repair the oil cooler with new connections

2. Clean the oil cooler's hoses thoroughly using compressed air.

3. Flush the oil cooler with approx. 200 ml automatic transmission fluid.

4. Check that the coolant has not become contaminated by the automatic transmission fluid. Change the coolant if necessary.

5. Clear old adaptation values in the TCM and carry out a new adaptation.
