When fault criteria have been met, a diagnostic trouble code will be generated and the CHECK ENGINE lamp will go on if the trouble code function orders it.
The CHECK ENGINE lamp comes on during the third driving cycle after the fault was detected if the fault is still active.
The CHECK ENGINE lamp goes out as soon as the control module detects that the fault is no longer present.
The diagnostic trouble code will be cleared if 40 ignition cycles with afterrun have been carried out without the fault recurring during any of the ignition cycles.
For a diagnostic trouble code to be completely cleared, the afterrun must expire after the trouble code has been cleared.
