During manufacture the gearbox is filled with Saab's synthetic gearbox oil MTF 0063 and requires no subsequent oil change. The gearbox oil is fitted with a level plug (2). When checking the oil level the level plug is removed and oil is added until oil runs out of the level plug. Oil is added via the mounting hole for the reversing light switch (1) after first removing the switch. The gearbox oil capacity is 1.6 litres.
