| BACKGROUND |
Repeat repair of start difficulties. Trouble not found on replaced components returned to Warranty Part Centre at SAAB.
| CONDITIONS |
CIM DTC procedures and fault symptoms will be updated in next TIS2web release. WIS will be updated in week 4, 2010 and Tech2 at the release 2009 week 50.
| SYMPTOM DESCRIPTION |
Ignition Switch cannot be turned & display warning message steering lock failure or key not accepted.

Ask the customer about the car behaviour before, during and after the concern occurred.
Displayed messages? What kind of message was displayed? Did the message show during driving or only when the key was inserted?

Was the steering wheel locked or unlocked i.e was it possible
to turn the wheel?

or intermittent?

Did the engine crank when the key was turned to "Start" position?

Process to follow when fault tracing
Check DTC's -> make a note of all DTC's -> clear the codes -> remove key and try restarting -> check for DTC's again -> make a note of all ->Go to TIS2web for updated information about "DTC fault tracing procedures" and "Fault symptoms tracing procedures". If not possible to turn ignition switch use the "reasons for blocking" menu in Tech2 and note the content.Check WIS for latest fault tracing procedures.
Check the battery and its connections
Check TIS2web for battery tester procedure. Remember to select "In car" or "Out of the car". TIS2web is updated regarding fuses that should be pulled out when testing in car.Re-charge battery if state of charge (SOC) is below 80%.

DTC's U1501 00, U1501 0F, B1440 00, B1440 0F, B1440 71, B3935 00, B3055 00, B3948 0F and C0547 04. Refer to TIS2web for updated procedure.Check wiring harness and ground connections
There may, in rare cases, be a display message and/or difficulties to turn the key without DTCs present. See procedure per fault symptom in TIS2web and note that wiring harness and/or ground connections may cause this symptom.Battery issues
Low battery voltage at some occasion during the previous driving cycle has the highest likelihood to be root cause for "steering lock" and /or "key not accepted" messages and difficulties to turn the ignition key and or crank in start position.Do not forget to check TIS2web for updated information before analysis and repair of these concerns.
If battery test fails
Check charging system alternator failure or high resistance in wiring, which may cause a voltage drop and/or improper charging.Check accessory installations that may cause excessive current draw when vehicle is parked. No accessories may be connected to wires between CIM-ISM-SCL.

Checking and charging battery
Always make sure battery has >80% state of charge before a new car is delivered to the customer.Do not check the battery immediately after engine has been running or directly after external charging has been performed. Let the battery rest for 2 hours before checking.
If the battery has a low state of charge, it must be charged before testing. Remember to let the battery rest for 2 hours before testing.
Component replacement
If replacing the battery, please make sure that the new battery has >80% state of charge before being delivered to the customer. Charge if necessary.Stored batteries must be charged before voltage drops below 12.4V or they will be permanently damaged.
Keep the tester code with the replaced battery.
If battery replacement is necessary, be sure to enter information and tester code for the new battery on the battery card.
