To remove

Before removing the control module to change it, perform Before removing a control module


1. Open the radiator cap.

2. Raise the car.

3. Drain the coolant.


4. Remove the screw from the coolant pipe attaching lug.


5. Lower the car to the floor.

6. Remove the battery and the battery tray.


7. Remove the coolant pipe from the thermostat housing and hold the pipe out of the way with 83 95 212 Strap .


8. Put the gear selector in position P and undo the nut to the lever. Engage position N before removing the lever.


9. Remove the lever. Pull back the gear cable and lift it up.

10. Remove the bolts securing the control module.

11. Pull out the lock pin, press down the lock and unplug the control module connector while lifting up the control module.


Important

Take care when releasing the locking mechanism on the connector so as not to damage the connector. Pull the halves straight apart to avoid bending the pins. For further information regarding connectors, refer to Connectors, handling and inspection .


12. Lift off the control module from the shaft and the connector. Lift first straight up so the connector in the gearbox is not damaged. Then turn the control module so that it comes loose from the shaft.


To fit


1. Fit the control module. Press down the control module carefully against the shaft and the connector in the gearbox. The inner part of the control module may need to be turned slightly to fit the shaft. Fit the bolts. Connect and lock the connector.

Tightening torque 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)


Important

Take care when plugging in the connector so as not to damage or press out the pins/sleeves in the connector. For further information regarding connectors, refer to Connectors, handling and inspection .



2. The arrow on the inner rotating part of the control module must point to the marking on the housing in position N.

3. Fit the coolant pipe with a new O-ring to the thermostat housing. Do not tighten the bolt before the bolt for the attaching lug is fitted.


4. Raise the car.

5. Fit the screw to the coolant pipe attaching lug.


6. Lower the car to the floor.

7. Tighten the screw on the thermostat housing.

8. Test pressurise the cooling system in accordance with Cooling system, test pressurising .

9. Fit the lever and gear cable. Put the gear selector in position P.

Tightening torque 20 Nm (17 lbf ft)


10. Fit the battery tray.


11. Fit the battery and the cover.

12. Fill with coolant. See Bleeding and topping up the cooling system .

13. Upon control module replacement: Carry out Procedure after control module installation and service programming if necessary. Also carry out Adaptation, resetting .

14. Perform programming of the gear selector position sensor in neutral using the diagnostic tool.

15. Carry out Measures after disconnecting the battery .
