Roof

Some weld joints on the car may be MIG brazed, with brazing material of bronze wire. An MIG braze can be identified by its yellow colour. Always replace an MIG braze with another MIG braze.

Warning

Repairs to MIG brazing using conventional welding methods and normal filler material are forbidden. Cracks can arise which can impair performance in a collision.


To remove


1. Remove the windscreen and the rear window.

2. Remove the roof moulding. Unscrew the mounting sleeves to the roof carrier. (4)

3. Grind away the seam welds at the roof corners (4). Note that the seam welds could be MIG brazed.


4. Drill out the spot welds.

5. Cars with sun roof: Remove the retaining bolts or grind off the MIG brazing.


6. Tap out the roof.


To fit


1. Straighten and grind all surfaces which are to be welded.

2. Apply welding primer to the surfaces that are to be welded.

3. Place the new roof in position and secure it with some welding clamps.

4. Cars with sun roof: Fit the retaining bolts or replace the MIG brazing.


5. Spot weld the roof in place.

6. Apply a seam weld to each corner.


7. Grind the welds.

8. Wash away surplus welding primer. Welding primer reduces the adhesion of paint, filler and sealant.

Apply air hardening (etching) primer to all the bare metal surfaces.

9. Fit the four roof-rack fixing sleeves.

10. Seal joints and seams with sealant.

11. Apply rust protector to the roof edge after painting. Use Terotex HV 400.

12. Fit the windscreen and rear window. Fit the roof moulding.
