Position sensor, accelerator pedal (379), ME9

Location

Accelerator pedal position sensor (379)

Main purpose

The task of the position sensor is to convert the driver's request from a gas pedal position into an instruction which the engine management system control module can understand and process. This is directly influenced by the gas pedal.

Type

Within the position sensor are two potentiometers which vary the voltage to the control module sensor inputs as a function of the shaft angle of the position sensor.

The position sensor consists of the resistance path with collector shoes. The collector shoes are mounted on the position sensor shaft and move over the resistance paths in relation to the shaft movements.

To obtain reliable information from the position sensor, it is divided into two different potentiometers. Both are supplied with 5V but the signal to the control module is always twice as large on P1 as on P2, 0-5V on the one and 0-2.5V on the other. This ensures both the function and diagnosis of the position sensor, see illustration on sensor internal connections.

On idle, the voltage on the control module inputs is approx. 1.1 V and 0.55 V respectively.

Connection

Pin No. Signal type Description
1 Power supply, 5V Connected to ECM pin 56(B).
2 Power supply, 5V Connected to ECM pin 7(B).
3 Signal, P1 Connected to ECM pin 60(B).
4 Ground Connected to ECM pin 40(B).
5 Ground Connected to ECM pin 8(B).
6 Signal, P2 Connected to ECM pin 44(B).

The voltage from the sensor varies in relation to the angle on the sensor shaft.
