Silencer, rear, 4WD

To remove


1. Raise the car.

2. Cut the exhaust pipe to the specified dimension, 70 mm on the side to be replaced (A). Cut the pipe at a right angle. Use 83 95 667 Pipe cutter, exhaust system .


3. Remove the rear silencer (B).


To fit


1. Clean the cut to remove burrs and dirt.

2. Grind away rust and any welding sparks from the centre silencer's pipe with emery cloth.

3. Fit the rear silencer with the jointing clamp (A) (use mounting paste) (turn the clamp's opening forward and the nuts down) and new rubber mountings (B).


4. If necessary, also replace the rubber mountings of the centre silencer and the second rear silencer.

5. Adjust the centre and rear silencers so that they are hanging neutrally. The centre silencer should hang alongside the anti-roll bar.

6. For cars with visible tail pipes: Check that the tail pipes are in the centre of the recesses in the bumper and flush with the bumper's profile.

7. Tighten the nuts on the clamp.

Tightening torque 40 Nm (30 lbf ft).

8. Lower the car.

9. Connect an exhaust hose and start the engine. Check the exhaust system for leaks.
