Delivery line for power steering, B284

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.


Important

Always use wing covers when working in the engine bay.


To remove


1. Secure the steering wheel in the following position using the steering wheel lock:

LHD: straight ahead

RHD: approx. 20° to the right.

2. Remove the air filter housing cover.

Important

Be careful of the electrical connection to the brake vacuum valve.



3. Remove the air filter. Detach the intake hose and remove the air filter housing.

4. Remove the intake manifold of the mass air flow sensor.

5. Clamp the return hose and feed hose with 30 07 739 Hose pinch-off pliers .

6. Remove the delivery line clamp from the engine bracket.


7. Detach the delivery line from the power steering pump using 32 025 061 Crowfoot wrench .

8. Raise the car.

9. Remove the front bumper shell .

10. Suspend the radiator assembly from the radiator member with two 83 95 212 Straps .

11. Remove the right-hand air shield.

12. Remove the rear catalytic converter .

13. Remove the bolt holding the front torque rod to the subframe.


14. Remove the bolt holding the rear torque rod to the subframe.

15. Remove the steering shaft joint from the steering gear.


16. RHD: Place a receptacle under the car. Detach the delivery line and the return line from the steering gear. Plug the lines.


17. Position 83 95 311 Trolley lift with 83 94 801 Parent fixture and 83 96 137 Centring tool, subframe - body .

18. Detach the inner parts of the wheel arch liners and move aside slightly.

19. Remove the subframe bolts and the rods.


20. Lower the subframe about 100 mm (4").

21. LHD: Place a receptacle under the car. Detach the delivery line and the return line from the steering gear. Plug the lines.


22. RHD: Remove the delivery line from the clip on the steering gear.


23. Remove the delivery line from the clips on the subframe.


24. Remove the clamps from the mountings on the charge air cooler.


25. Remove the delivery line.


To fit


1. Fit the delivery line and the clamps to the charge air cooler.


2. Fit the pipe in the plastic clip on the subframe.


3. LHD: Fit the delivery line and return line to the steering gear.

Tightening torque 12 Nm (9 lbf ft)


4. Raise the subframe and fit 83 96 137 Centring tool, subframe - body against the guide holes in the body. Fit the rods and tighten the bolts.

Tightening torques

Subframe: 75 Nm + 135° (55 lbf ft + 135°)

Torque rod: 90 Nm + 45° (67 lbf ft + 45°)


5. Lower the trolley lift and move it out of the way. Attach the coolant hose to the holder on the subframe.

6. Remove the straps.

7. RHD: Fit the delivery line and return line to the steering gear and the clip on the steering gear.

Tightening torque 12 Nm (9 lbf ft)


8. Fit the steering shaft to the steering gear. Clean the threads and apply Threadlock, Loctite 242 to the threads.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)


9. Fit the front torque rod bolt.

Tightening torque: 60 Nm + 90° (50 lbf ft + 90°)


10. Fit the rear torque rod bolt.

Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 lbf ft)

11. Fit the rear catalytic converter .

12. Fit the right-hand air shield.

13. Fit the bumper shell and the front part of the wheel arch liner.

14. Lower the car to the floor.

15. Attach the delivery line to the power steering pump.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)


16. Fit the clamp to the engine mounting.

17. Remove the hose pinch-off pliers.

18. Fit the intake manifold of the mass air flow sensor.


19. Fit the air filter housing.

20. Fit the air filter and its cover.

21. Fill the power steering fluid according to specification, bleed the power steering system and check for leaks.
