General work instructions, structural gluing

Instructions

Follow the safety data sheet/work instructions for Adhesive kit 93 160 535.

Glue system adhesion applies to body panels, service panel parts that are ground smooth and primer painted, and ground primer painted.

Important

Do not use spot weld paint, glass primer or paint primer in the glue's application area. The adhesive properties would then be lost.

It is possible to work with glue layers between 0.2 mm and 3 mm, due to the fitting tolerances of the joined parts.

Brazing and welding work must take place outside the glue zone at a distance of at least 50 mm. The reason for this is to avoid burning out the glue and damage to the weld due to the glue combusting.

When fitting smaller body parts the glue must be applied on both sides of the body seams and the spare part with a bead of glue that is at least 4 mm in diameter.

On larger components the glue must be applied on one side of the spare part with a bead of glue of at least 6 mm.

The operating temperature must not be under 15 °C.

Apply the glue quickly.

The glue is compatible with the approved sealing and painting materials.

Handling time for the glue system after application is up to 2 hours (at 23 °C) for joining, handling, resistance spot welding and riveting of panel parts.

Important

Higher ambient temperature shortens handling time.

Mixing the glue components must be carried out in a static mixer in the mixer tube. With the second generation of static mixers (can be screwed in on the cartridge) the times for glue application have been shortened considerably (see information on the time flow).

Application time

Glue bead, diameter
5 mm 8 mm 10 mm
Time after 1 metre 1/2 minute 1 minute 1-1/2 minutes
Time after 3 metres 1 minute 2-1/2 minutes 4 minutes
Time after 1 metre 2 minutes 4-1/2 minutes 6-1/2 minutes
Time after 1 metre 2-1/2 minutes 6 minutes 8-1/2 minutes

The information in the table is based on an application at 21 °C with a compressed air gun - only with mechanical pressure plate.

Assistance for avoiding incorrect glue mixtures

Equalise the levels of both glue components (see work instructions)

Note the colour of the glue mixture:

Light blue (homogenous) correct mixture - continue quickly with the work procedure

White or dark blue : incorrect mixture - remove immediately from prepared materials

Carried out at room temperature 21 °C to 23 °C.

Under 15 °C application is difficult, the viscosity of the glue is too high.

Over 15 °C to 30 °C is the optimal range for the work.

Absolutely do not heat the glue cartridge (hot air gun), and do not immerse it in hot water either.

Application equipment

Three types of gun have been tested for interference-free work with the glue.

Battery powered guns - variably controllable

Hand guns

Compressed air guns - only with mechanical pressure plate

Important

Using a compressed air gun without mechanical pressure plate could result in the glue mixture being incorrect.

Advantages with body gluing

- Improved screening and sealing of the glued body seam.

- Increase in long-term durability and anti-corrosion protection for the bolted joints.

- Reduction of vibration.

- Prevents electrochemical corrosion.

- Compatible with the approved sealing and painting materials.

- Reduction of the number of welding points on join seams by means of gluing compared with conventional resistance spot welding without glue.
