Shaft seal for power steering pump

Cars affected

Saab 9-3 (9440) M03-11 with engine alternative B207.

Background

The shaft seal for the power steering pump's input shaft is now available as a separate spare part. In order to replace the shaft seal, use the following method.

Parts required

12 807 425 Shaft seal

Procedure

To remove

1. Remove the power steering pump, see WebWIS-9-3 (9440) - 6. Steering assembly - Power steering system - Adjustment/Replacement.

2. Secure the power steering pump in a vice.

3. Clean the surface around the shaft seal (A).

4. Carefully press out the shaft seal (A) using a screwdriver (B) from the outside of the shaft seal.

To fit

1. Clean gasket residue from the surface.

2. Check the surface of the power steering pump's shaft. If there are scratches or if the shaft is heavily worn then replacing the shaft seal is of no use and the power steering pump must be replaced instead.

3. Lubricate the new shaft seal with a non-acidic Vaseline.

4. Start by pressing in the shaft seal by hand.

5. Use a 22 mm sleeve (A) and a plastic mallet (B) and gently tap the shaft seal until it is level with the pump housing.

6. Fit the power steering pump, see WebWIS-9-3 (9440) - 6, Steering assembly - Power steering system - Adjustment/Replacement.

Marking the power steering pump .

After the replacement of the shaft seal the power steering pump must be marked (A) with a drift as illustrated so that it is possible to see afterwards that the shaft seal has been replaced.
