Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

A personal communication must be sent to the owners of cars already delivered requesting them to get in touch with the nearest Saab garage as soon as possible to have the fault rectified.

Cars affected

Saab 9-3 M08 within Vehicle Identification Number range 81100408-81105669.

Note

Some cars within the Vehicle Identification Number range are not affected. See the separate information for the Vehicle Identification Numbers affected.


Background

A manufacturing fault may result in the reduction or disappearance of handbrake braking force.

Symptom description

Reduced/non-existent handbrake braking force.



Parts required

12 801 833 Handbrake cable, 2 per car

48 07 939 Cable tie, 2 per car

If required (if the mounting for the rear seat cushion is damaged when the seat cushion is removed):

24 437 789 Mounting, 2 per car

For fitting the modification identity plate (not US/CA):

12 785 148 Modification identity plate

93 160 907 Cleaning agent Motip Dupli, aerosol 400 ml (sufficient for 50-100 cars)

Checking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

Before proceeding, check box A2 of the modification identity plate. From and including M04 the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". A modification identity plate must be fitted in accordance with the section "Fitting the modification identity plate" where local directives require the marking of the car. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

Procedure


1. Remove the cover on the left-hand side of the instrument panel.

2. Is there a green marking on the side of the panel?


Yes: The handbrake cables are OK and should not be replaced. Refit the cover.

No: Proceed to step 3.

3. Replace the handbrake cables in accordance with the following.



To remove

1. Remove the floor console's front side pieces.


2. Remove the floor console's rear cover.


3. Remove the floor console's rear side covers.

4. Loosen the cable for the handbrake and remove the cable ferrule from the mechanism.


5. Remove the rear seat cushion in accordance with WIS - 9-3 - 8. Body - Seats - Adjustment/Replacement - Rear seat cushion.

6. Lift up the carpet and remove the cable from the cable tie in the floor.


7. Raise the car.

8. Remove the cable from the brake caliper's actuating lever and from the mountings.

Right-hand side: Remove the wiring harness.


9. Remove the rubber grommet and pull out the cable.



To fit


1. Route in the new cable and fit it into its mountings under the car.

Right-hand side: Fit the wiring harness.


2. Fit the rubber grommet.

3. Fit the cable to the brake caliper's actuating lever.

4. Lower the car.

5. Fit a new cable tie and secure the cable to the floor.


6. Fit the cable and the ferrule to the lever mechanism.


7. Fit the floor carpet in place.

8. Fit the rear seat cushion in accordance with WIS - 9-3 - 8. Body - Seats - Adjustment/Replacement - Rear seat cushion.

9. Apply the handbrake to tension the cable.

Release the handbrake.

10. Raise the car.

11. Check and adjust the handbrake cable in accordance with WIS - 9-3 - 5. Brakes - Handbrake - Adjustment/Replacement - Adjusting the handbrake cable.


12. Fit the floor console's rear side pieces.

13. Fit the floor console's rear cover.

14. Fit the floor console's front side pieces.


15. Refit the cover on the left-hand side of the instrument panel.


Marking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

After carrying out the procedure, box A2 on the modification identity plate must be marked. From and including M04 the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". Mark the box with the number "7" if the procedure was carried out by the importer or with the number "8" if carried out by the dealer.

Fitting the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

Note

A modification identity plate must only be fitted where local directives require the marking of the car.
