Power steering unit, Z19

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.


Important

Always use wing covers when working in the engine bay.


To remove


1. Carry out Before removing a control module .

2. Lift off the battery cover and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

3. Raise the car.

4. Remove the lower engine cover.


5. LHD: Remove the connector for the power steering unit.


6. LHD: Remove the nuts from the rubber pads.

RHD: Remove the two front nuts from the rubber pads.


7. Protect the flexible bellows in the exhaust pipe from fluid spill and place a receptacle under the car.

8. Lower the car to the floor.

9. Unhook the coolant reservoir and move it to one side. Remove the brake fluid sensor connector.


10. RHD: Remove the bracket for the particle filter pressure sensor from the bulkhead.


11. Detach the water hoses to the heater package at the plastic holder and bend them aside.


12. RHD: Remove the connector for the power steering unit.


13. RHD: Remove the rear nut from the rubber pad.

14. Empty the power steering fluid reservoir using suitable oil draining equipment.

15. Fold forward the power steering unit and remove the delivery pipe using 89 96 803 Power steering pump hydraulic pipe spanner, 18 mm fitted to a 1/2" ratchet handle with reducer socket.


16. Remove the return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.

17. Lift up the power steering unit.

18. Wipe away any spilled power steering fluid.


To fit


1. Lower the power steering unit onto the steering gear bracket.


2. Fit the return hose to the power steering fluid reservoir with a new hose clip.

3. Fit a new sealing ring and connect and tighten the delivery pipe to the hydraulic unit.

Tightening torque 27 Nm (20 lbf ft)

4. RHD: Fit the rear nut on the rubber pad.

Tightening torque 7 Nm (5 lbf ft)


5. RHD: Attach the connector to the power steering unit. The wiring harness should lie between the bracket and the delivery pipe.

Note

Check that the wiring harness does not touch the steering shaft joint.


6. Fit the water hoses in the plastic holder.


7. RHD: Fit the bracket for the particle filter pressure sensor onto the bulkhead.


8. Fit the coolant reservoir and attach the brake fluid sensor connector.


9. Raise the car.


10. LHD: Fit the nuts to the rubber pads.

RHD: Fit the two front nuts on the rubber pads.

Tightening torque 7 Nm (5 lbf ft)


11. LHD: Attach the connector to the power steering unit.

12. Remove the protection from the flexible bellows and wipe clean from oil.

13. Fit the lower engine cover.


14. Lower the car to the floor.

15. Connect the battery and fit the battery cover.

16. Fill with power steering fluid and bleed the system, see Hydraulic system EHPS, filling and bleeding .

Important

The EHPS system must not be run dry. Do not reuse drained fluid. Fill the hydraulic system with special fluid.


17. Carry out After changing a control module.

18. Check for leaks in the delivery and return lines.

19. Carry out Procedures after disconnecting the battery .
