Scrapping cars with airbags and belt tensioners, CV

Warning

The airbags, seat belt tensioners and the protective arches' activation unit are classed as pyrotechnic articles and are to be stored and handled in accordance with the rules and regulations applying in the country in question.

To prevent damage when scrapping cars with airbags and belt tensioners, untriggered pyrotechnic components must be rendered unusable by electrical detonation as described below before the car is scrapped.

These safety measures are essential, as the pyrotechnical units can cause serious injury and material damage if handled unprofessionally.

Warning

Pyrotechnical components must be correctly fitted in the car before activation. Make sure there are no loose objects in the vicinity of the component.

Activating a loose or dismantled airbag module can cause personal injury.

Safe distance for activation is 10 metres.

There is a risk of accidents if an unactivated pyrotechnical component is exposed to high temperatures while scrapping, for example, or if charged parts start to burn or smoulder.

Warning

Do not splice any leads of the airbag system.

Splicing can cause malfunctions that render the system inoperable and can lead to serious or fatal injuries.

Note

The detonation device used consists of twin-lead cable approx. 10 m long with push-button and battery clamps and connector for connection to the wiring harness. The wiring harness is changed depending on which component in the airbag system is to be scrapped.

The battery to which the detonating device is to be connected must be in good condition.

Scrapping front belt tensioners

The belt tensioners are activated using 84 71 104 Cable with switch (B) and 86 12 434 Adapter cable, triggering device SRS (A).

This measure may be required on both the right and left sides.

1. If possible close the hood and all windows.

Warning

The battery's ground cable must be removed before the positive cable. Wait for at least 1 minute after disconnecting the battery before beginning any work on the airbag system. Otherwise the airbag may be deployed unintentionally and this can cause fatal/severe personal injuries.

2. Set the seat to its front upper position.

3. Set the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

Warning

If the airbag is not activated at the first attempt, remove the manual triggering device from the battery and examine the leads and the battery carefully.

Parts that are included in the SRS system may under no circumstances be removed from a car in order to be used in another car.

14. Disconnect the detonating device's leads from the battery immediately after the belt tensioner has detonated.

15. Open the car doors.

Wait until the reaction gases have escaped.

Be careful when removing the connector from the belt tensioner gas generator as it can be hot. Wear gloves.
