P1653

Main Relay Circuit. Voltage Drops too Late.

Fault symptoms

CHECK ENGINE.

Engine will not start.

Engine turns off.

On-Board Diagnostics

Type of diagnosis:

- Continuous.

Enable criteria:

- Ignition off.

Fault criteria:

- The voltage on the input is greater than 20% of the battery voltage for more than 2.1 s. (Battery voltage x 0.2 = fault criterion.)

Dependents:

- None.

System reaction to a fault:

- Engine turns off.

OK report:

- The voltage on the input is less than 20% of the battery voltage for more than 2.1 s. (Battery voltage x 0.2 = fault criterion.)

Fault handling: (See section Fault handling III, other emissions-related components and functions for more information)

- Type III.

Diagnostic help

The diagnosis concerns an electrical fault on the lead between control module pins 1, 2, 76 and the main relay.

Checking the wiring

Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to detect intermittent breaks and short circuits. Observe the multimeter, diagnostic tool or test lamp during the check.
