Tachometer sensor, engine speed

Tachometer sensor, engine speed

The tachometer sensor is inductive and gives the engine management system control module information on engine speed and when cylinders 1 and 4 are in TDC.

A field rotor flange on the crankshaft with 23 teeth and one large gap identifies 1 and 4 TDC. Together with the camshaft position sensor, cylinder 1 can be identified.

The control module also measures the pulses from the 23 teeth. If the combustion in any of the cylinders differs, the signal pattern from the inductive position sensor will change.

The engine control module evaluates this change and increases the fuel quantity to the relevant cylinder.

Diagnostics

If the crankshaft position sensor or corresponding wiring harness is out of order, it can be indicated by one of the following DTCs being set.

P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit. Incorrect Signal.

P0337 Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit. No Signal.

System reaction to a fault

The idling speed will be set to 1000 rpm.

The following limitations will apply: Pedal position sensor adjustable to max 40%, fuel quantity max 30 mm 3 /combustion.
