The cable carries test and detonation current from the SRS control module to the passenger airbag.
The passenger airbag, which has a volume of about 119 litres, incorporates a gas generator. The gas generator is bolted to the airbag housing, which is bolted to the dashboard. The airbag is held in place by a film with fracture lines. The dashboard has corresponding fracture lines.

The gas generator consists of a steel housing with two electric detonators, two explosive charges, pressurized gas and a distributor that cools and distributes the gas.
The gas generator is detonated in two stages: a primary stage (80%) and secondary stage (20%). The delay between the two detonations depends on the information the control module receives from the various sensors.
On receiving an activation command, the control module sends a current pulse to the detonator which ignites the explosive charge. The charge for stage one shots out a projectile, which warms the compressed gas. The gas expands and passes through a distributor into the airbag. The stage two charge further heats the gas which therefore expands further.
