Solenoid valve, swirl throttle

Solenoid valve, swirl throttle

The task of the solenoid valve is to convert electronic instructions from the PSG 16 control module to control a negative pressure that can act on the swirl throttle switch. The negative pressure is taken from the engine vacuum pump, which always generates a pre-determined negative pressure.

Solenoid valve pin 2 is connected to control module pin M43 and solenoid valve pin 1 is connected to B+ from fuse 16B.

The control valve is grounded through control module pin M43 with a 140 Hz PWM pulse. The timing ratio determines the magnitude of the negative pressure in the hose to the swirl throttle switch by which means the position of the swirl throttle can be controlled.

Diagnostics

If the control module registers that the solenoid valve circuit is open, P0660 is generated.

If the control module output is shorted to B+, DTC P0662 is generated.

If the control module output is shorted to ground, DTC P0661 is generated.

System reaction to a fault

If the swirl throttle remains closed, engine output reduces at speeds above approx. 3500 rpm. This is due to low air mass/combustion in addition to increased fuel consumption for a longer period of time.
