Temperature sensor, coolant, engine management system

The task of the temperature sensor is to inform the engine control module of the existing coolant temperature.

The connections for the temperature sensor are

1. Signal, water temperature: Pin 1 of the temperature sensor is connected to pin 8 of the engine control module

2. Sensor ground: Pin 2 of the temperature sensor is connected to pin 45 of the engine control module

The coolant temperature sensor is located on the top of the thermostat housing, in the front and to the right in the engine bay. The sensor is type NTC and is fed 5 V by the engine control module.

Temperature sensor resistance changes with the temperature; sensor resistance is as follows:

20°C (68°F)

2500 Ohm 6%

100°C (212°F)

186 Ohm 6%

Diagnostics

If the sensor input is shorted to B+, DTC P0118 is generated.

If the sensor input is shorted to ground, DTC P0117 is generated.

One minute after the engine is started, a check of coolant temperature is ordered. This is then compared with oil temperature. When oil temperature reaches 80°C , the control module waits 3 minutes. If coolant temperature has not reached 70°C by the end of the 3 minutes, DTC P0116 is generated.

System reaction to a fault

P0117 and P0118.

As soon as the control module detects the fault, the system uses fuel temperature. -25°C is used for glow duration control and +50°C is used for injection start calculation.

For DTC P0118, the read value on the diagnostic instrument is 0°C.

For DTC P0117, the read value on the diagnostic instrument is 0°C.

P0116

As soon as the control module detects the fault, substitute value 0°C is used.

For DTC P0116, the read value on the diagnostic instrument is 0°C.
