Brief description

Brief description

General

The audio/navigation system has a radio receiver, navigation function and several other features.

The audio/navigation system has electronic theft protection that works in conjunction with the car by the system being “married” to the car and therefore belonging to just the car in which it was initially installed. Each time the audio/navigation system is turned on, a check is performed to determine if the system is the correct one.

The audio/navigation system is available in two versions: Premium and Prestige.

The audio/navigation system includes the following units:

Head unit, audio/navigation

- Radio

- CD/DVD player

- GPS receiver with gyro

- Touchscreen

ESP control module

Amplifier

Speakers

Antenna system for radio

GPS antenna

SID

Steering wheel controls

CD changer

Head unit, audio/navigation

The audio/navigation head unit is located in the dashboard. It contains the radio, CD/DVD player, GPS receiver with gyro and touchscreen.

The head unit's 6.5" touchscreen is used as the control panel and main display window, enabling the control of the system. The left-hand side of the touchscreen surround has a number of buttons - CD/DVD eject, On/Off, navigation, sound source, display and system settings - and a volume knob.

Turn the system on with the On/Off button. Select audio or navigation with the SRC (audio) or NAV (navigation) button. All subsequent selections use the touchscreen, such as radio presets and choosing a destination for navigation.

The head unit contains a GPS receiver that receives signals from the GPS antenna and calculates the position of the car. The head unit also contains a gyro so that the system knows in which direction the car is travelling. The navigation system uses the gyro, DVD (digital maps), vehicle speed from the ESP control module, and GPS to make the calculations required for navigating to a destination.

The head unit communicates with the various other units and systems via the car's bus and wiring harnesses.

Radio

The radio module in the audio system is an AM/FM receiver with PLL frequency synthesis for the precise tuning of stations. It is factory programmed to the frequency bands (2 x 6 AM and 3 x 6 FM) used on different markets. If there is a loss of power (e.g. the battery is disconnected), none of the stored radio settings will be lost.

The audio system has an RDS radio. This enables RDS radio services, such as finding the strongest radio signal.

CD/DVD player

The CD/DVD player is front loading and integrated in the head unit. The disc slot accepts one CD/DVD. The CD/DVD player is primarily intended for the navigation system and a DVD containing map information. In addition, standard audio CDs and CDs with MP3 files will play on the CD/DVD player.

Amplifier

The Premium and Prestige audio systems both have external amplifiers. The amplifier in the Prestige system has a higher output power than the Premium. It is available in two models, one for the 4D and one for the 5D.

Premium has 7 output channels and Prestige 9 output channels for speakers. The two additional output channels on the Prestige system are for bass speakers in the parcel shelf on the 4D or on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D.

The amplifier has a separate power supply. It is not connected to the bus.

Speakers

The Premium and Prestige audio systems have side and centre speakers in the dashboard and speakers in the front and rear doors. The Prestige system also includes bass speakers in the parcel shelf on 4D cars and one bass speaker on the right-hand side of the luggage compartment on 5D cars.

Voice guidance from the navigation system is provided through the front speakers.

GPS antenna, cars with OnStar

The GPS antenna is concealed in the dashboard. The antenna is connected to the audio/navigation head unit.

GPS antenna, other

The GPS antenna is mounted on the car roof. The antenna is connected to the audio/navigation head unit.

Antenna system, radio (4D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception on the car's audio system:

Antenna system 1 - comprises an AM antenna, an FM antenna and antenna amplifier. System 1 is fitted as standard in cars for the EU market that have the Premium audio system.

Antenna system 2 (Diversity) - comprises an AM antenna, an FM1 antenna, an FM2 and antenna amplifier. System 2 is fitted as standard in cars for the US market, and cars for the EU market that have the Prestige audio system.

The antennas are fitted to the rear window. The AM antenna forms a separate loop and the FM antennas are integrated with the heating element on the rear window. The rear window is the same for both antenna systems, which allows the option of upgrading from antenna system 1 to 2.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the head unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

Antenna system, radio (5D)

There are two different types of antenna system for radio reception on the car's audio system:

Antenna system 1 comprises:

- an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the head unit.

Antenna system 2 (Diversity) comprises:

- an AM and FM antenna with antenna amplifier and coaxial cable for connecting between the amplifier and the head unit.

- an FM antenna with antenna amplifier and a coaxial cable for connecting between the two antenna amplifiers.

The AM/FM antenna is located in the rear right side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear right side window.

The FM antenna is located in the rear left side window and its antenna amplifier in the roof above the rear left side window.

The antenna system can be upgraded to antenna system 2 on markets where antenna system 1 is fitted as standard.

The antenna amplifier is powered from the head unit and the amplified antenna signal is supplied to the radio via a coaxial cable.

CD changer

The CD changer is located in the luggage compartment in 4D and the 5D cars. The CD changer accepts 6 CDs.

The CD changer is connected to the bus, via which it communicates with the head unit. It is activated (powered) when it receives a “Wake-up” signal from the head unit via the bus. The sound signal (balanced line output) from the CD changer is sent to the amplifier and speakers via the head unit.

The car is equipped as standard with a CD changer.

Steering wheel controls

For the simple and safe control of the system's most important functions, the steering wheel has special steering wheel controls.

The controls are connected to the SID which detects their positions and sends information via the bus to the head unit.
