Brief description of the SID

Brief description of the SID

The SID functions include driver information, horn controls, instrument and display lighting and trip computer calculations for the SID unit functions. The SID is equipped with an individual diagnostics function which generates a diagnostic trouble code when a fault occurs.

The SID receives information from sensors, switches and other systems. Specific information is sent by SID on the bus.

SID has the following sensors, switches and connectors:

Ambient temperature sensor

Steering wheel controls

Coolant level sensor

Washer fluid level sensor

Filament monitor, front lights

Rheostat

Interior light sensor

Ambient temperature sensor

The temperature sensor provides information to SID regarding current ambient temperature.

Steering wheel controls

Cars with Sentronic have 9 button functions on the steering wheel. The buttons are used for horn activation, car audio system control, upshift and downshift.

Cars without Sentronic have 7 button functions on the steering wheel. The buttons are used to activate the horn and control the car audio system.

When a button is pressed, SID reads a voltage level.

Cars without an audio system or Sentronic have a horn button function only.

Coolant level sensor

The sensor detects low coolant levels and provides SID with information in the event of a low level.

Washer fluid level sensor

The sensor detects low washer level and provides information regarding low levels to SID.

Filament monitor

The filament monitor, which monitors front headlamp function, provides information to SID.

Rheostat

SID uses the current rheostat level in order to control SID button and display lighting.

The rheostat level is sent on the bus in order to be used for control and instrument lighting adjustment.

Interior light sensor

The built-in SID light sensor is used to measure cabin light intensity. SID uses the current light intensity and rheostat level to determine display lighting intensity.

Cabin light level is send on the bus to be used for main instrument panel indicator lamp lighting adjustment.

The display lighting value is output to the bus to control the light intensity of the displays.

Units and languages

Depending on the market, SID presentation of unit combination and languages can be selected. The following are available:

Unit combinations

Language

litres/100km + °C (24 hour)

Swedish

miles/gallon (US) + °F (12 hour)

English

miles/gallon (imp) + °F (12 hour)

German

miles/gallon (imp) + °C (12 hour)

French

Italian

Spanish

The units and language selected are output to the bus for use by other systems.

Acoustic warning

SID has a built-in speaker for individual function signals as well as functions in other systems.

Trip computer

The trip computer in SID is controlled with buttons located under the display.

The computer is available in two versions, SID 1 and SID 2 with the functions shown in the table:

Time

Included in SID are a digital clock which displays time of day, date and month whenever the SID display is switched on. Current year is also included but is not displayed.

The clock is adjusted manually but can also be adjusted by RDS time which the radio sends out on the bus.

CHECK messages

The SID can be used by all connected systems in order to show CHECK messages.

Service message

Service reminder showing when it is time for a service.

Audio display

The SID can be used to show radio, cassette and CD settings for the car audio system.

Horn

SID activates the horn after receiving information from the steering wheel control.

Night Panel

The Night Panel function switches off the display and parts of the instrument lighting, and dims the button lighting.

The Night Panel information is output to the bus for use by other systems.

Engine off time

SID calculates the length of time the engine has been switched off. Time information is used by the ambient temperature function.

The time value is output to the bus to be used for the starting settings for the ACC, etc.

Important

The Service Manual does not cover the complete operation of the SID unit. More detailed information is given in the Owner's Manual.
