Compressor (4-cyl)

To remove

1. Place the car on a lift.

2. Drain the refrigerant from the A/C system. See Draining and filling of refrigerant .

3. Unplug the connector to the compressor located on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlamp.

4. Relieve the tension on the multigroove V-belt by compressing and locking the belt tensioner with a 3 mm Allen key.

5. Disconnect the inlet hose with mass air flow sensor without unplugging the connector and move it to one side.

6. Remove the heat shield from the exhaust manifold.

7. Loosen and move the by-pass pipe and valve out of the way.

8. Unplug the radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling. Undo the hose clamps holding the hose to the coolant expansion tank.

Cars with automatic transmission:

Disconnect the oil cooler hose from the bottom of the fan cowling.

9. Remove the fan cowling, 2 bolts and 2 locating grooves.

10. Disconnect and fold away the pressure hose from the turbo.

11. Loosen the low-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings.

12. Loosen the high-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings.

13. Raise the car and remove the air shields. Remove the multigroove V-belt from the compressor.

14. Unscrew the 3 compressor retaining screws, start with the top screw.

15. Lift off the compressor from the mounting hook.

To fit

1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor. See Filling and adjustment of compressor oil .

2. Hang the compressor on the mounting hook.

3. Screw on the compressor with retaining screws.

Tightening torque, M8: 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)

Tightening torque, M10, 40 Nm (30 lbf ft)

4. Fit the multigroove V-belt on the pulley and release the belt tensioner. Check that it is positioned correctly.

Mount the air shields and lower the car.

5. Lubricate and fit the new O-rings to the compressor pipes.

6. Connect the high-pressure pipe to the compressor, 1 bolt.

Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)

7. Connect the low-pressure pipe to the compressor, 1 bolt.

Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)

8. Connect the pressure hose to the turbo.

9. Fit the fan cowling, 2 locating grooves and 2 bolts.

10. Put back the hose brackets and plug in the radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling.

Cars with automatic transmission:

Connect the oil cooler hose on the bottom of the fan cowling.

11. Plug in the connector for the compressor and press it into the holder on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlamp.

12. Fit the by-pass pipe and valve.

13. Fit the heat shield.

14. Fit the inlet hose and mass air flow sensor.

15. Evacuate the A/C system and fill with R134a refrigerant. See Draining and filling of refrigerant .

16. Running in the compressor to distribute the compressor oil in the system:

- Activate the A/C and let it run for at least 2 minutes at engine speed <1500 rpm.

17. Test run the A/C system. See Performance test, A/C system .
