General

Note

Certain services require that a supplementary subscription has been taken out with OnStar.

OnStar is a telemetry system which is equipped with a mobile phone and GPS receiver that, in conjunction with the other car electronics, facilitates a number of services. The system can:

Automatically telephone for assistance if the front airbags are activated.

Assist with navigation to a particular address and inform the driver of the car's position .

Ring for the police, fire services or send EMS messages if required.

Give assistance and ring for help if there is a fault in the car, if a tyre is punctured or if the car has run out of petrol

Make bookings for hotels and restaurants etc.

Give advice when planning holiday journeys.

Make personal telephone calls at the press of a button.

Activate the horn and hazard warning lights if the car should be difficult to locate, e.g. in a large car park.

The system contains two units VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module) and OIM (OnStar Interface Module) which communicate with each other via an internal bus. The system is connected to the radio, microphone, control button unit, GPS/mobile phone antenna, airbag control module, horn, hazard warning lights and the data link connector.

Control module, OnStar, VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module)

The main unit in the OnStar system is the VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module). The VCIM incorporates a mobile telephone and a GPS receiver. The unit is connected to the OIM, radio, microphone, control button unit, GPS/mobile telephone antenna and data link connector via the car's wiring harness. The VCIM is fitted with one 12 pin and one 16 pin connector.

Control module, OnStar, OIM (OnStar Interface Module)

The OIM (OnStar Interface Module) works as an interface between the VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module) and the car's airbag control module, horn and the hazard warning lights. Communication with the VCIM is effected via an internal bus. Signals from the airbag control module and to the horn and hazard warning lights are converted to a bus message for communication with the VCIM. The module is connected to the car wiring harness via a 16 pin connector.

Control button unit, OnStar

The OnStar control button unit is positioned on the instrument panel to the right of the steering wheel and has three buttons and an indicator lamp. The indicator lamp shows a green or a red light depending on the status of the system. The 6 pin connector of the control button unit is connected, via the car wiring harness, to the 16 pin connector on the VCIM (Vehicle Communication Interface Module) of the OnStar control module.

Antenna, mobile telephone/GPS

The antenna for the GPS and mobile telephone system is mounted on the car roof. The antenna is connected to the VCIM in which the mobile telephone and GPS receiver are integrated.

SRS/Airbag control module

In the event of a front airbag being activated, the OnStar system will transmit information giving the position of the car to the OnStar Call centre on condition that a telephone connection can be established from the car. The airbag control module is connected to the OIM which sends a message to the VCIM instructing it to make the emergency telephone call.

Horn

If requested by the customer to assist in the finding of the car, the OnStar Call Center can remotely control the car horn. The horn relay is connected to the OIM. The VCIM sends a bus message to the OIM requesting activation of the horn.

Hazard warning lights

If requested by the customer to assist in the finding of the car, the OnStar Call Center can remotely control the car's hazard warning lights. DICE is connected to the OIM. The VCIM sends a bus message to the OIM requesting activation of the hazard warning lights via DICE.

Main unit, audio system

The audio unit is connected to VCIM in order to relay the incoming telephone sound during a telephone call. During a telephone call the audio unit switches off all other signals to the speakers.

SID

The system uses the SID to indicate that the telephone is active. Display information is sent on the bus from the audio system and read by the SID.

Amplifier

The Premium and Prestige audio systems both have side speakers which relay incoming telephone sound during a call.

Speakers

The audio system has side and centre speakers in the instrument panel and speakers in the front and rear doors. In the "Prestige" system there are also bass speakers in the parcel shelf. The speakers are used to relay the incoming telephone sound when making a telephone call.

Steering wheel controls

The volume for the incoming telephone sound can be adjusted easily and safely with the controls on the steering wheel.

The switches are connected to the SID which detects their positions and sends information via the bus to the main audio unit.
