Headlamp washers

Description of operation

A washer jet is mounted on a telescopic cylinder in the bumper in front of each headlamp. The washer jet is protected by a cover in the bumper when it is not in operation. When activated, the cylinder raises the washer jet from the bumper and two jets are directed on the headlamp lens.

The headlamp washers are started by activating the windscreen washer switch (61) for longer than 0.5 seconds. The ignition must be turned to ON, the lights must be turned on and the vehicle speed must be below 200 km/h before the washers can be activated. The washer jets are active for 0.8 seconds and then stop for 1.2 seconds, after which there will be another short jet (0.8 s).

Reactivation of the headlamp washers requires 120 seconds to have passed since the last activation of the washer pump or the windscreen washers to have been activated 5 times. If the ignition is turned off and on again, the headlamp washers will operate the next time the windscreen washer switch (61) is activated.

If the washer fluid level is below 1 litre, SID will send a bus message "WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW" to DICE to prevent the washer pump from being started when the washer fluid level is low.

When the switch (61) is turned on, +54 is supplied from pin 5 on the switch via fuse 37 to the windscreen washer pump (63b) and to DICE pin 68. Dice (628) grounds pin 27 for about one second to trigger the relay (667). The washer fluid pump (668) is powered on pin 1.

After about one second, DICE (628) will ground the headlamp washer relay (667) once again and current will be applied to the washer fluid pump (668) pin 1.
