Valve timing, exhaust camshaft check

To remove

Raise the car and remove the front right wheel.

Remove the lower engine cover and the drive belt cover.

Relieve tension on the belt tensioner by using a jointed wrench to turn it clockwise. Lock the tensioner with 87 92 335 .

Remove the belt. If the old belt is to be refitted, mark the direction of rotation.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Important
The centre bolt of the belt pulley is not to be slackened.

Lower the car to the floor.

Remove the upper engine cover and insulation.

Detach the crankcase ventilation pipe (2 bolts and a hose clip). Raise the pipe slightly.

Note
Take extra care if the car is equipped with preheated crankcase ventilation. Make sure that the heating coil in the hose is not damaged.

Cut the cable tie and remove the upper timing cover.

Reset the engine by removing the plug and fitting 32 025 008 Camshaft fixing tool .

Turn the crankshaft until the tool clicks and locks the exhaust camshaft.

Check that the markings match the illustration.

Remove the bolt from the oil pump and fit 32 025 009 Crankshaft fixing tool on the crankshaft sprocket.

If it is possible to fit the tool without turning the crankshaft, the timing belt is properly fitted. If not, see Timing belt (in situ).

To fit

Remove the tools. Fit the plug in the camshaft housing and the bolts of the oil pump.

Fit the upper timing cover and secure the wiring harness with a new cable tie.

Attach the crankcase ventilation pipe and hose on the camshaft housing.

Fit the insulation and the upper engine cover.

Raise the car.

Fit the crankshaft pulley.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)

Note
Make sure that the guide pin sits properly in its recess.

Fit the drive belt and remove the lock pin.

Fit the drive belt cover and the lower engine cover.

Mount the fright front wheel and lower the car.
