Electrically adjustable door mirrors

Electrically adjustable door mirrors

By pressing the switch the door mirrors are folded inwards. With the next press on the button the rear-view mirrors are folded out to normal position. The function is only active when the ignition key is in the ON position.

In the rear-view mirror is a small permanent magnet motor, a current-limiting resistor for the end positions and mechanics for transmitting the movement of the motor to the rear-view mirror housing.

The rear-view mirror is supplied with +54 on pin 8 via fuse C in the relay board 22a. It is grounded via pin 10. The control current is connected to pin 3 which can change between 0 V and B+ using a closing switch which is located on the instrument panel.

Rear-view mirror setting

When the button for rear-view mirror setting is pressed, switch 538 is closed and B+ is fed out on pin 7 on the switch. From there a cable runs to H8-3 pin 3, where the cable is divided to the right and left door mirrors. The control current is connected to pin 3 on each door mirror. When pin 3 is activated with power the motor in the rear-view mirror will be supplied with current via a pole changing relay in such a direction that the rear-view mirror folds inwards. The function of the control current is to control the pole changing relay, the motor's power supply comes from pin 8, via the pole changing relay. When the rear-view mirror is completely folded inwards the current to the motor is limited by a resistor to avoid damage. the rear-view mirror remains in the folded in position as long as there is B+ on pin 3.

Rear-view mirror, adjusting outwards

When the switch is pressed in again the control current to the door mirror is interrupted. The current to the rear-view mirrors and pin 3 then falls to 0 V. The motor now starts and the rear-view mirror folds out to normal driving position. When the rear-view mirror is completely folded outwards the current to the motor is limited by a resistor to avoid damage.

If the mirrors have been adjusted manually out of their position then it may require several presses on the button before the mirror resumes normal position. When manual adjustment takes place and electrical adjustment is activated a pronounced click sound is heard when the motor reaches its end position. When the mirrors are folded out electrically the mirrors rest in normal position.
