Oil filter housing with oil cooler

To remove

Warning

The cooling system is under pressure. Hot coolant and steam can escape.

- Open the cap slowly to release the pressure.

- Carelessness can cause eye and burn injuries



1. Remove the upper engine cover and insulation.


2. Open the expansion tank cap to release any excess pressure.

3. Raise the car.

4. Remove the lower engine cover.


5. Remove the front spoiler shield.

6. Place a receptacle under the radiator and drain the coolant.

7. Remove the right front wheel.

8. Remove the headlamp position sensor (option).

9. Remove the right side cover.

10. Undo the clips of the brake hose and move it aside. Undo the clips of the ABS cable.


11. Remove the nut from the outer track rod and pull the track rod loose with 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .

12. Remove the upper bolt of the steering swivel member. Hold the bolt and remove the nut. Tap out the bolt. A new bolt will be used for installation.

Note

The bolts are spline bolts and must not be turned.


13. Undo the lower nut and move the steering swivel member out slightly.

14. Remove the suspension arm's outer lead-through bolt from the steering swivel member. Prise loose the suspension arm, move it down and secure it in that position using two 83 95 238 Wedge that are placed between the suspension arm and the anti-roll bar.

15. Use a brass drift/small mallet to tap loose the drive shaft from the intermediate shaft. Move the gear to the left to make it easier to get the drive shaft out. Tap the drive shaft out further if necessary and the lower it in front of the suspension arm.

Warning

Use protective goggles to protect against flying splinters of metal.



16. Remove the bearing pedestal bolts. Pull the intermediate shaft out of the gearbox. Plug the gearbox with 87 92 665 Protective plug, drive shaft hole .

Important

Place a receptacle under the gearbox in order to avoid oil spillage on the floor.



17. Lower the car to the floor.

18. Detach the coolant hoses from the oil cooler.

19. Unplug the connector from the oil pressure switch.


20. Remove the upper bolts of the oil filter housing.

21. Raise the car.

22. Remove the lower bolt and carefully lower the oil filter housing.


To fit


1. Fit new O-rings to the oil filter housing.

2. Position the oil filter housing and insert the lower bolt.


3. Lower the car to the floor.

4. Fit the upper bolts of the oil filter. Tighten all bolts.

Tightening torque: 47 Nm (35 lbf ft)

5. Plug in the oil pressure switch connector.

6. Attach the coolant hoses to the oil cooler.

7. Raise the car.

8. Fit 83 95 162 Protective collar, drive shafts in the seal ring on the gearbox. Note: always replace the shaft seal in the gearbox. Lubricate with transmission fluid. See List of lubricants and sealing compounds .

Important

Always replace the shaft seals in the gearbox. Lubricate with gearbox oil.


9. Make sure the intermediate shaft is clean. Then insert it in the gearbox.

Important

Fit the intermediate shaft in the gearbox until approx.20 mm are remaining and pull out the tool before the sealing surface of the shaft reaches the shaft seal.


10. Insert the reset of the shaft.

11. Fit the bearing pedestal.

Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)


12. Move out the McPherson strut and connect the drive shaft to the intermediate shaft until the circlip engages. Lubricate with 90 513 210 Universal paste .


13. Remove the wedges, reposition the suspension arm and connect it to the steering swivel member. Fit and tighten the nut to torque.

Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)

14. Attach the steering swivel member to the MacPerson strut using a new bolt. Hold the bolt in place and fit the nut.

Note

The bolts are spline bolts and must not be turned.


15. Tighten both nuts.

Tightening torque: 100 Nm +90° (74 lbf ft +90°)

16. Fit the track rod.

Tightening torque: 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)

17. Fit the brake hose in the mounting on the steering swivel member and fit the lock clips. Connect the ABS cable.

18. Fit the side cover.


19. Fit the headlamp position sensor (option)

20. Fit the wheel, see Wheels

21. Fill with transmission fluid to the correct level. See Filling transmission fluid .

22. Fit the front spoiler shield.

23. Fit the lower engine cover.

24. Remove the receptacle.

25. Lower the car to the floor.

26. Fit the insulation and upper engine cover.

27. Fill with coolant as specified. See Coolant .

28. Check the engine oil level. Top up as necessary. See Recommended oil grade .
