Rear bumper abutment 5D

Rear bumper abutment 5D

Certain weld joints on the car may be MIG brazed whereby the filler material is bronze rod. The characteristic sign of MIG brazing is that the joint is gold coloured. MIG brazing must always be replaced with new MIG brazing.

Warning

Repairs to MIG brazing using conventional welding methods and normal filler material are forbidden. Cracks can arise which can impair performance in a collision.

To remove

1. Position the car in an alignment jig and align as necessary.

2. Drill out the spot-welds and grind away the seam welds. Note that the seam welds may be MIG brazed.

3. Loosen away the rear bumper abutment and straighten any damaged sheet metal and panels.

To fit

1. Drill holes for plug-welding in the spare part.

2. Grind clean the surfaces on the body and the spare part that are to be welded.

3. Apply welding primer to the surfaces to be plug and spot welded.

4. Position the new rear bumper abutment in place and secure it with a few welding clamps. Check the fit with the alignment bench measuring system.

5. Close the boot lid and check the fit of the rear bumper abutment.

Warning

Repairs to MIG brazing using conventional welding methods and normal filler material are forbidden. Cracks can arise which can impair performance in a collision.

6. Weld on the rear bumper abutment.

7. Grind the welds.

8. Remove any remaining welding primer. Welding primer reduces adhesion of paint, filler and sealant.

9. Apply primer to all bare metal surfaces.

10. Seal joints and seams with sealant.

11. Apply PVC replacement to the underside of the rear bumper abutment.
