Handling of isocyanates

Background

Various studies, which have been performed as part of a project analysing isocyanates and amines in the car industry, have shown that varying quantities of isocyanates are briefly produced during high temperature work (such as welding, drilling, cutting and grinding painted metal). This can constitute a health risk, not just for the person performing the work but also for those in the immediate surroundings.

Procedure

To minimize the risk of isocyanates from being produced, the paint must be removed using a low speed grinder from 10 cm around the point at which high-temperature work is to be carried out.

Important

Remember that the rear side of the plate and the inside of members are painted. Place the local extractor in these areas.


The handling of products containing isocyanates varies with regards to health risks. However, when handling such materials national standards regarding thermosetting plastics must be followed, such as "Härdplastföreskriften AFS1996:4" in Sweden.

There is no need to change present procedures for the fitting of window glass, as there is no evidence that work with glass adhesives is one of the "very dangerous" tasks.

Removing window glass using heat emitting tools does however produce isocyanates. Follow therefore the method described in Saab's workshop information.

Protective equipment

For all so-called "high-temperature" work (heating to temperatures of approx. 170° C or above), where polyurethane or isocyanates are present, the work must be regarded as presenting a risk or high risk of exposure to isocyanates, with subsequent health risks if protective equipment is not used.

Respiratory protection, at a minimum a respirator with carbon filter and dust filter P3 , must be used. If large amounts of fumes are produced or if two-component products (with free isocyanates) are used, an oxygen supply/welding mask with oxygen supply should be used.

Work must be performed in premises that comply with national thermosetting plastic regulations, such as "Härdplastföreskriften AFS1996:4" in Sweden. In large premises, part of the premises should be screened off so that those in the surroundings are not unnecessarily exposed to isocyanates.

Continuous inspection

The working environment shall be regularly inspected, in accordance with national regulations, such as Internal Control of the Working Environment AFS 1996:6 in Sweden.
