Timing belt (in situ)

To remove


1. Raise the car and remove the front right wheel.

2. Remove the lower engine cover and the drive belt cover.


3. Relieve tension on the belt tensioner by using a jointed wrench to turn it clockwise. Lock the tensioner with 87 92 335 .


4. Remove the belt. If the old belt is to be refitted, mark the direction of rotation.

5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Important

The centre bolt of the belt pulley is not to be slackened.


6. Remove the 2 lower bolts of the timing cover.


7. Lower the car to the floor.

8. Remove the upper engine cover and insulation.

9. Fit 83 94 850 Lifting beam on the engine. Relieve the load on the engine bracket.


10. Remove the nuts and bolts securing the engine bracket.


11. Cut the cable tie and remove the upper timing cover.


12. Remove the lower timing cover. Note the position of the bolts.

13. Detach the crankcase ventilation pipe (2 bolts and one hose clip) and raise it slightly.

Note

Take extra care if the car is equipped with preheated crankcase ventilation. Make sure that the heating coil in the hose is not damaged.



14. Reset the engine by removing the plug in the camshaft housing and fitting 32 025 008 Camshaft fixing tool .


15. Turn the crankshaft until the tool clicks and locks the exhaust camshaft.

16. Check that the markings match the markings in the illustration.

17. Relieve tension in the belt tensioner and remove the timing belt.



To fit


1. Fit the timing belt so that the markings on the belt align with the markings on the crankshaft, exhaust camshaft and fuel pump sprockets.


2. Raise the car.

3. Remove the bolt from the oil pump and fit 32 025 009 Crankshaft fixing tool .

4. Fit the belt tensioner but do not tighten the bolt.

5. Adjust by pushing the adjustment lever in the direction of the arrow until the belt tensioner arrow aligns with the marking. Tighten the belt tensioner using a large screwdriver and an M8 bolt as counterhold.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)


6. Remove the adjustment tools and turn the crankshaft 2 rotations.

7. Refit 32 025 009 Crankshaft fixing tool . Check that the belt is properly fitted and that the tension roller's adjustment arrow is aligned with the marking.

8. Remove the tools. Fit the plug in the camshaft housing and the bolts of the oil pump.


9. Attach the crankcase ventilation pipe and hose on the camshaft housing.


10. Fit the lower timing cover with the upper bolts.

11. Fit the upper timing cover and secure the wiring harness with a new cable tie.


12. Fit the engine bracket.

Tightening torque, bolts 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)

Tightening torque, nut, up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 73514907:

84 Nm (62 lbf ft)

Tightening torque, nut, from and including Vehicle Identification Number 73514908:

74 Nm (55 lbf ft)


13. Remove the lifting beam.

14. Fit the insulation and upper engine cover.

15. Raise the car.

16. Fit the 2 lower bolts of the lower timing cover.


17. Fit the crankshaft pulley.

Note

Make sure that the guide pin sits properly in its recess.


Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)


18. Fit the drive belt and remove the lock pin.


19. Fit the drive belt cover and the lower engine cover.


20. Mount the right front wheel and lower the car to the floor.
