Circuit Description

The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is an integral part of the Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor. The IAT sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the intake air. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the IAT signal circuit and a ground for the IAT low reference circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0111 Idle Test

DTC P0112, P0113, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119, P0125, or P0128 is not set.

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) at engine start is colder than 120°C (248°F).

The ECT is warmer than 60°C (140°F).

The vehicle speed is less than 3 km/h (2 mph).

DTC P0111 runs continuously when the above conditions are met for greater than 2 s.

P0111 Cruise Test

Before the ECM can report DTC P0111 failed, DTC P0101 must run and pass.

DTC P0112, P0113, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119, or P0128 is not set.

The ECT at engine start is colder than 120°C (248°F).

The ECT is warmer than 75°C (167°F).

The vehicle speed is greater than 40 km/h (25 mph).

The MAF is between 15.6 and 250 g/s.

Decel fuel cut-off is not active.

DTC P0111 runs continuously when the above conditions are met for greater than 2 s.

P0111 Rationality Test

The ECT at engine start is warmer than 35°C (95°F).

The ECT at last engine shut down was warmer than 80°C (176°F).

Since last shut down, the ECT has decreased more than 40°C (69°F).

DTC P0111 runs continuously when the above conditions are met for greater than 20 s.

P0112 and P0113

The engine run time is greater than 15 s.

The engine is idling for greater than 3 s.

The IAT is colder than 35°C (95°F).

The IAT change is more than 2.3°C (4.1°F).

The DTCs runs continuously when the above conditions are met fro greater than 2 s.

P0114

The ignition is ON.

The DTCs run continuously within the enabling conditions.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0111

The ECM detects that the IAT remains steady within 2°C (4°F) during the idle test.

The ECM detects that the IAT decreased less than 2°C (4°F) during the cruise test.

Any of the above conditions exists for greater than a cumulative of 45 s for the cruse test or 55 s for the idle test.

The ECM detects that the difference between the IAT and the ECT less than -20°C (-36°F) OR more than 35°C (63°F).

The above condition exists for greater than 2 s.

P0112

The ECM detects that the intake air temperature is warmer than 132°C (270°F) for greater than 4 s or a cumulative of 30 s.

P0113

The ECM detects that the intake air temperature is colder than -42°C (-43.6°F) and remains steady within 3°C (5°F) during a cumulative air flow of greater than 999 grams. The scan tool is limited to -40°C (-40°F), so the diagnostic procedure uses -39°C (-38°F) to determine if there is an IAT condition. The condition exists for greater than 4 s or a cumulative of 30 s.

P0114

The ECM detects that the IAT sensor signal is intermittent or has abruptly changed for period of time greater than 5 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0111, P0112, P0113, and P0114 are Type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

DTCs P0111, P0112, P0113, and P0114 are Type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

If the vehicle has sat overnight, the IAT sensor and the ECT sensor values should be within 3°C (5°F).

High resistance on the IAT sensor signal circuit could set a DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Allow the engine to idle. Diagnostic trouble codes P0111, P0112, P0113 or P0114 must not be activated.

2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor.

2. Remove the fuse that supplies B+ to terminal 56 X2 of the ECM.

3.
Warning

Do NOT use a test lamp to test the continuity of the circuit. Damage to the control module may occur due to excessive current draw.

Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.

4. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance, or for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.

5. Install the fuse that supplies B+ to terminal 56 X2 of the ECM.

6. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground

7. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.

8. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.

9. Ignition ON, verify that the scan tool IAT sensor parameter is colder than -39°C (-38°F).

10. If warmer than the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.

11.
Note

If the fuse in the jumper wire opens, the signal circuit is shorted to a voltage and the sensor may be damaged.

Ignition ON, install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground. Verify the IAT sensor parameter is warmer than 128°C (263°F).

12. If colder than the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for an open or short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.

13. Ignition ON, install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3.

Verify the IAT sensor parameter is colder than -39°C (-38°F).

14. If warmer than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.

15. If all circuits/connections test normal, test or replace the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor.

Component Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor.

2.
Note

A thermometer can be used to test the sensor off the vehicle.

Test the IAT sensor by varying the sensor temperature while monitoring the sensor resistance. Compare the readings with the Temperature Versus Resistance - Intake Air Temperature Sensor table and verify that the resistance is within 5 % of the specification.

3. If not within the specified range, replace the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor.
