Circuit/System Description

The crankshaft position sensor circuits consist of an engine control module (ECM) supplied 5 V reference circuit, low reference circuit, and an output signal circuit. The crankshaft position sensor is an internally magnetic biased digital output integrated circuit sensing device. The sensor detects magnetic flux changes of the teeth and slots of a 58 tooth reluctor wheel on the crankshaft. Each tooth on the reluctor wheel is spaced at 60 tooth spacing, with 2 missing teeth for the reference gap. The crankshaft position sensor produces an ON/OFF DC voltage of varying frequency, with 58 output pulses per crankshaft revolution. The frequency of the crankshaft position sensor output depends on the velocity of the crankshaft. The crankshaft position sensor sends a digital signal representing the crankshaft reluctor wheel to the ECM while the wheel teeth spin past the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM uses each signal pulse from the crankshaft position sensor to determine the crankshaft speed, and decodes the reference gap on the crankshaft decoder wheel to determine the crankshaft position. The information is then used to establish the correct sequence for engine ignition and fuel injection. The ECM also uses output from the crankshaft position sensor to determine the camshaft position relative to the crankshaft, in order to detect when a cylinder is misfiring.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine is cranking or running.

The ECM has detected greater than 12 camshaft revolutions.

These DTCs run continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 5 s.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0335 00

The ECM does not detect a signal from the crankshaft position sensor.

OR

The ECM detects a crankshaft position sensor signal with out reference pulse for more than 18 revolutions.

P0336 00

The ECM detects an incorrect number of crankshaft position sensor reference pulses for 6 consecutive crankshaft revolutions.

P0337 00

The ECM detects less than 200 reference pulses for 10 consecutive crankshaft revolutions.

P0338 00

The ECM detects greater than 200 reference pulses for 10 consecutive crankshaft revolutions.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P0335 00, P0336 00, P0337 00 and P0338 00 are Type B DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0335 00, P0336 00, P0337 00 and P0338 00 are Type B DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

The ECM uses the camshaft position sensors to determine engine speed and position when there is a crankshaft position sensor condition.

The engine will operate with a crankshaft position sensor condition only if the ECM has stored the learned reference position of the camshafts in memory. With a crankshaft position sensor condition the engine will go into a limp-home mode after a restart. The ECM then calculates engine speed from one of the camshaft position sensors.

An intermittent condition in the camshaft position sensor circuits can cause a crankshaft position sensor DTC to set. Inspect the camshaft position sensor, harness connections, and related wiring, if you suspect this condition.

Test the current output of the signal circuit if you suspect high resistance in the circuit. The current output should be greater than 1 mA when measured on the 400 mA scale.

A low fuel condition may set DTC P0336 00. If the fuel tank is allowed to run dry and numerous attempts are made to restart the engine after the initial stall, DTC P0336 00 may set. Any other condition that results in fuel starvation where unsuccessful start attempts are made may set DTC P0336 00.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool.

2. If any DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .

3. Clear the DTC information with a scan tool. Try to start the engine and observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0335 00, P0336 00, P0337 00, or P033 00 should not be set.

4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, engine OFF, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.

5. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

6. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

7. Ignition ON, engine OFF, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the signal circuit terminal 1 and ground.

8. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

10. If all circuits and components test normal, test or replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.
