Circuit/System Description

The crankshaft position sensor circuits consist of an engine control module (ECM) supplied 5 V reference circuit, low reference circuit, and an output signal circuit. The crankshaft position sensor is an internally magnetic biased digital output integrated circuit sensing device. The sensor detects magnetic flux changes of the teeth and slots of a 58 tooth reluctor wheel on the crankshaft. Each tooth on the reluctor wheel is spaced at 60 tooth spacing, with 2 missing teeth for the reference gap. The crankshaft position sensor produces an ON/OFF DC voltage of varying frequency, with 58 output pulses per crankshaft revolution. The frequency of the crankshaft position sensor output depends on the velocity of the crankshaft. The crankshaft position sensor sends a digital signal representing the crankshaft reluctor wheel to the ECM while the wheel teeth spin past the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM uses each signal pulse from the crankshaft position sensor to determine the crankshaft speed, and decodes the reference gap on the crankshaft decoder wheel to determine the crankshaft position. The information is then used to establish the correct sequence for engine ignition and fuel injection. The ECM also uses output from the crankshaft position sensor to determine the camshaft position relative to the crankshaft, in order to detect when a cylinder is misfiring.

Conditions for Running the DTC


The engine is cranking or running.

This DTC runs continuously once the above conditions are met for greater than 5 s.


Conditions for Setting the DTC

The crankshaft position sensor input is not continuous when the engine is running.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0339 00 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0339 00 is a Type B DTC.

Circuit/System Verification


1. Try to start the engine while observing the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0339 00 should not be set.

2. Engine cranking, observe the scan tool Engine Speed parameter. The scan tool should indicate a steady 200-300 RPM while cranking.

3. Move related harnesses/connectors of the crankshaft position sensor and verify the engine does not stumble, stall, or change engine speed.

4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.


Circuit/System Testing

Note

If the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor lead is damaged in any way, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.



1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.

2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, engine OFF, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.

5. If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

6. If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

7. Ignition ON, engine OFF, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the signal circuit terminal 1 and ground.

8. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

10. If all circuits and components test normal, test or replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.


Component Testing

Note

You must perform the circuit/system testing before proceeding with component testing.



Static Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.

2. Inspect the sensor and the O-ring for damage.

3. If the sensor is loose, incorrectly installed, or damaged, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.

4. Test for 1 850-2 450 Ω at 20°C (68°F) between the signal circuit terminal 1 and the low reference circuit terminal 2.

5. If not within the specified range, replace the B26 Crankshaft Position Sensor.
