Circuit/System Description

The positive crank case ventilation heater is controlled by the ECM. Ignition voltage is directly supplied to the positive crank case ventilation heater and the ECM provides a controlled ground circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition is ON or the engine is running.

The DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P052E

The ECM detects an over temperature at the output powerstage when the positive crank case ventilation heater is commanded ON.

P053A

The ECM detects an open circuit when the positive crank case ventilation heater is commanded ON.

P053B

The ECM detects a short to ground when the positive crank case ventilation heater is commanded ON.

P053C

The ECM detects a short to voltage when the positive crank case ventilation heater is commanded ON.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P052E, P053A, P053B and P053C are Type A DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P052E, P053A, P053B and P053C are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

DTC P052E, P053A, P053B or P053C should not set.

Run the vehicle under the Conditions for Running the DTCs. You can also run the vehicle under the conditions you noted in data for the snapshots/fault register.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.

2. Ignition ON, test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Test for 3.0-4.0 V between the low reference circuit and ground.

5. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

6. If less than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

7. Test for greater than 9 V between the control circuit and ground.

8. If less than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.

Component Testing

Static Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.

2. Test for 6.0-10.0 Ω between the control terminal 1 and the low reference terminal 2 of the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.

3. If not within the specified range, replace the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.

4. Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater housing.

5. If not the specified value, replace the E45 Crankcase Ventilation Heater.
