1. Head-up Display Malfunction

Circuit/System Description

The Head-up display is a secondary display system capable of reflecting important vehicle information onto the windshield. The vehicle information is displayed using virtual imaging and is reflected on the windshield in front of the driver. Battery positive voltage is the power source to the Head-up display. The head-up display can only be enabled when the ignition is active and in RUN position. The head-up display receives vehicle information for display via the serial data circuit. The Head-up display switch signal circuit is pulled up to battery voltage in the Head-up display. The head-up display also provides the head-up display switch with a low reference. The head-up display switch is a momentary contact switch that connects a series of resistors in a resistor ladder format. The Head-up display monitors the Head-up display switch signal circuit to determine the Head-up display switch inputs. Each switch state PAGE, UP, DOWN corresponds to a certain resistance value. The head-up display determines the switch pressed by the voltage drop across the resistors. The Head-up display intensity can be changed by using the Head-up display dimming switch. The Head-up display is turned OFF using the dimming switch. The Head-up display does not have a separate Off switch.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, verify that when the Head-up display dimming switch is change for minimum to maximum position the scan tool Display Dimming parameter changes from 0% up to 100% (depending on ambient lighting conditions the intensity may not reach 100%) and the and the scan tool Dim Select Switch parameter changes from 1-12.

2. Verify that when the Head-up display switches are pressed and released , the Head-up display scan tool switch parameters toggle between Active and Inactive.

3. If the switch parameters do not toggle between Active and Inactive, refer to Head-up Display Switch Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Head-up Display Inoperative

1. Perform Info Display Pattern 1 Check test with the scan tool, verify all pixels on Head-up display are turned On or Off.

2. If not within the specified range, replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the P29 Head-Up Display.

4. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the Head-up display ground circuit terminal 6 and ground.

5. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

6. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates when connected between the B+ circuit terminal 4 and ground.

7. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

8. Test for less than 0.3 V between the dimming signal terminal 1 and ground.

9. If greater than the specified range, test the dimming signal circuit and the signal circuit terminal 3 and the low reference circuit terminal 2 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

10. Ignition OFF, switch the Head-up display dimming switch to minimum position (OFF). Test for 25-40 Ω between the dimming signal circuit terminal 1 and the low reference circuit terminal 2.

11. If less than the specified range, test the dimming signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

12. If greater than the specified range, test the dimming signal circuit and the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

13. Switch the Head-up display dimming switch to maximum position. Test for 875-950 Ω between the dimming signal circuit terminal 1 and the low reference circuit terminal 2.

14. If not in the specified range, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

15. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

Head-up Display Switch Malfunction

1. Perform Component Testing before Head-up Display Switch Malfunction.

2. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

3. Test for less than 5 Ω between the Head-up display switch low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.

4. If greater than the specified range, test the Head-up display switch low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

5. Ignition ON, verify that all scan tool Head-Up Switch parameter are Undefined.

6. If any not Undefined, test the Head-up display switch signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

7. Ignition ON, install a 604 Ω resistance between the signal circuit's connection 6 for the windshield display's switch and the low reference circuit's connection 1 for the windshield display's switch. Check that the diagnostic tool parameter Sida Switch is Active.

8. If not Active, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

9. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the P29 Head-Up Display.

Component Testing

Static Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

2. Test for 8.8-9.3 kΩ between the signal terminal 6 and the low reference circuit terminal 1.

3. If not within the specified range, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

4. Test for 550-650 Ω between the signal terminal 6 and the low reference circuit terminal 1 while pressing the Page switch.

5. If not within the specified range, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

6. Test for 1.5-1.7 kΩ between the signal terminal 6 and the low reference circuit terminal 1 while pressing the Up switch.

7. If not within the specified range, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.

8. Test for 3.3-3.7 kΩ between the signal terminal 6 and the low reference circuit terminal 1 while pressing the Down switch.

9. If not within the specified range, replace the S27 Head-Up Display Switch.
