Circuit/System Description

The headlamp switch is supplied with ground at all times. When lighting conditions are correct or the headlamp switch is placed in either the park or low beam position, ground is applied to the body control module (BCM) through the park lamp signal circuit. The BCM responds by applying battery voltage to the left and right park lamps, side marker lamps and tail lamps. This energizes the appropriate lamp.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine is running.

Headlamp switch in AUTO position.

The ambient light sensor is in daylight or under full light.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The BCM detects a short to ground on the control circuit.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The appropriate park lamp is inoperative.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The condition for setting the DTC is no longer present.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, perform the appropriate Park Lamp test. The appropriate front park lamp/side marker lamp and tail lamp should be ON/OFF.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the appropriate harness connector at the appropriate inoperative lamp listed below:

E13L Headlamp Assembly - Left

E13R Headlamp Assembly - Right

E5E Tail Lamp - Left

E5F Tail Lamp - Right

2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the appropriate ground circuit harness connector terminal listed below and ground.

E13L Headlamp Assembly - Left terminal 1

E13R Headlamp Assembly - Right terminal 1

E5E Tail Lamp - Left terminal F

E5F Tail Lamp - Right terminal F

3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate control circuit harness connector terminal listed below and ground:

E13L Headlamp Assembly - Left terminal 4

E13R Headlamp Assembly - Right terminal 4

E5E Tail Lamp - Left terminal A

E5F Tail Lamp - Right terminal A

5. Command the appropriate Park Lamp test with a scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.

6. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

7. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 Body Control Module.

8. If all circuits test normal, replace the appropriate inoperative lamp.

Repair Instructions
