43 99 317 Power steering pipe

Procedure

Check whether the power steering pipe's hose is chafed at the place indicated in the illustration.

Are there chafe marks on the hose?

YES

Continue as described in point 1.

NO

Continue as described in point 11.

1. Thoroughly clean the area round the return hose's connection to the power steering pump.

2. Disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump and insert the end into a receptacle holding at least 1 litre.

3. Raise the front assembly until the wheels are clear of the floor, start the engine and allow the power steering fluid to be pumped out of the system. Turn the steering wheel twice to full left and right lock. Switch off the engine after a maximum of 8 seconds as the pump could be damaged if allowed to run dry.

4. Connect the hose to the power steering pump.

5. Remove the front grille and both headlamps.

6. Remove the front bumper, air deflectors (spoiler sections) and the cover on the right-hand side of the radiator.

7. Detach the power steering pipe from the power steering pump, remove the fasteners from the body below the radiator and separate the pipe at the joint under the battery tray.

8. Connect the new power steering pipe to the power steering pump, making sure that the pipe is run so that it clears the radiator and the radiator mounting. Tighten the fitting securing the pipe to the pump.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (20 lbf ft)

9. Fill up with power steering fluid, start the engine and turn the steering wheel 2-3 times to full left and right lock. Switch off the engine and top up the power steering fluid as necessary.

10. Check whether there is any leakage.

11. Fit the protective sheathing on the pipe and adjust it so that it clears the radiator and the radiator mounting.

12. Refit the cover, air deflectors (spoiler sections) and front bumper.

13. Refit the headlamps and front grille.
