DTC description

DTC P2440

Secondary air injection system Shut-Off valve jams in open position

Circuit/System Description

A secondary air injection system helps to reduce hydrocarbon emissions during cold starts. An electric pump forces fresh air into the exhaust flow through a mechanical valve. This is in order to speed up the catalytic converter action. A pressure sensor monitors the air flow from the auxiliary air pump. The engine control module (ECM) supplies the 5 V reference circuit and grounds the low reference circuit. The sensor provides a signal voltage to the engine control module in proportion to the pressure changes in the auxiliary air system.

The ignition voltage is supplied directly to the air pump's relay. The engine control module controls the relay by grounding the control circuit, which activates the auxiliary air pump's relay. Battery voltage is supplied to the auxiliary air pump when the relay's contacts close.

Conditions for DTCs

DTC P0111, P0112, P0113, P0114, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119, P0418, P2227, P2228, P2229, P2257 or P2258.

More than 60 minutes has elapsed since the latest cold start.

The auxiliary air pump has requested ON during the start cycle.

The battery voltage is between 10 and 18 V.

The engine speed is lower than 3,500 RPM.

The temperature of the intake air is between -11 to +80 °C (12.2-176 °F).

Coolant temperature is between -11 to +120 °C (12-248 °F).

The air mass is less than 100 g/s.

The barometric pressure is greater than 70 kPa (10.2 psi).

The catalytic converter is active.

- DTC P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0111, P0112, P0113, P0114, P0116, P0117, P0118, P0119, P2227, P2228, or P2229.

- The engine speed is higher than 680 RPM.

- Coolant temperature when starting is between -11 to +70 °C (12-158 °F).

- The difference between intake air temperature and coolant temperature when starting is less than 15 °C (27 °F).

- The intake air temperature is greater than -12°C (10.4°F).

DTC P2440 runs once per ignition cycle when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for setting DTC

When the engine control module detects that the size of the secondary air injection system's pressure pulses, due to the exhaust pressure pulses, are greater or smaller than the calibrated limits.

OR

When the engine control module detects that the average value of the secondary air injection system's pressure pulses exceed the calibrated limit.

DTC P2440 is set within 60 s when one of the above conditions is met.

Activity when DTC is set

DTC P2440 is a type B DTC.

Conditions for clearing DTC

DTC P2440 is a type B DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, read DTC with the scan tool. Check that DTC P2431, P2432 or P2433 are not set.

2. If a DTC is set, go to DTC (DTC) list - vehicle for further fault diagnosis.

3. Compare the scan tool's barometric pressure with the table Altitude versus barometric pressure . The barometric pressure must be within the range for the specific altitude above sea level.

4. If not within the specified range, go to DTC P2227, P2228, or P2229 (LAU) for continued diagnosis.

5. Check the scan tool's secondary air injection system pressure and barometric parameters. The values should be between 3 kPa (0.4 psi).

6. If not within the specified range, go to DTC P2431-P2433 for continued diagnosis.

7. With the engine running, scan tool's secondary air injection system pressure and barometric parameters. The values should continue to be between 3 kPa (0.4 psi).

8. Refer to Observe Pump, secondary air injection - continuous operation

Request secondary air injection system relay ON with the scan tool. The secondary air injection system's sensor should show greater increase than 10 kPa (1.45 psi).

9. Drive the vehicle within the conditions for setting the DTC in order to check that it does not occur. The vehicle can also be driven within the condition from 'Freeze Frame'/the recorded malfunction situation.

Circuit/System Testing

Check the secondary air injection system's valve with regard to binding, damage or deformation which could prevent it from fully closing.

Repair or replace the secondary air injection system's valve if necessary.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completed diagnosis procedure.
