Diagnostic Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

The driver information center switch is a multiplexed switch. Battery power is provided to the driver information center switch via the instrument panel cluster. The driver information center switch signal circuit is pulled up to battery voltage in the instrument panel cluster. The instrument cluster also provides the driver information center switch with a low reference. The switch input to the instrument cluster is pulled low when a switch is activated. The driver information center switch is a momentary contact switch that connects a series of resistors in a resistor ladder format. The instrument cluster monitors the driver information center switch signal circuit to determine the driver information center switch inputs. Each switch state - Menu, UP, DOWN - corresponds to a certain resistance value. The instrument cluster determines the switch pressed by the voltage drop across the resistors.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, read off the scan tool Driver Information Center Switch parameter. Check that when the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch Menu is pressed and released the scan tool parameter toggles between Menu and Inactive.

2. If not the specified value, refer to Menu Switch Circuit Test.

3. Ignition ON, read off the scan tool Driver Information Center Switch parameter. Check that when the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch UP, DOWN, SET/CLR are pressed and released the scan tool parameter toggles between Up, Down, Clear and Inactive.

4. If not the specified value, refer to Up, Down, or Set/Clear Switch Circuit Test.

Circuit/System Testing

Menu Switch Circuit Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

2. Test for less than 30 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 3 X2 and ground.

3. If less than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. Ignition ON, test for greater than 4.8 V between the signal circuit terminal 5 and ground.

5. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the P16 Instrument Cluster.

6. If all circuits tests normal, replace the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

UP, Down, or Set/Clear Switch Circuit Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

2. While holding the Switch UP arrow in the UP position, test for 0.55-0.65k Ω between the signal circuit terminal 12 X2 and the low reference terminal 6 X2 at the switch.

3. If not within the specified range, replace the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

4. While holding the Switch DOWN arrow in the DOWN position, test for 1.5-1.7k Ω between the signal circuit terminal 12 X2 and the low reference terminal 6 X2 at the switch.

5. If not within the specified range, replace the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

6. While depressing the Switch Set/Clr button, test for 3.0-4.0k Ω between the signal circuit terminal 12 X2 and the low reference terminal 6 X2 at the switch.

7. If not within the specified range, replace the S78 Turn Signal/Multi-Function Switch.

8. If all circuits tests normal, replace P16 Instrument Cluster.
